Welcome to the Academy

Who We Are And What We Do
Hey there, I’m Ben, the founder of the US Whiskey Academy (USWA). I created the USWA with two goals in mind: 1). To focus exclusively on the vast frontier of American whiskey, and 2). To become THE comprehensive resource for the knowledge and appreciation of American Whiskey.
I’m honord to join on your journey through the vast landscape of American Whiskey. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on what would make the site even better, please contact me and let me know. This is a free, community resource for everyone who is as passionate about whiskey as I am.
Cheers!

Start with Curiosity
A familiar bottle can open unexpected doors: a forgotten life, a clever production choice, a flavor you couldn’t quite name. Curiosity is the soul of the USWA.
You don’t need an impressive collection or a practiced vocabulary to begin. Bring a question, follow a connection and see where it takes you.
All you need to get started is a little curiosity….
Navigating the Website
This is the Whiskey Hub - your home-page portal to American Whiskey. We’re set up a bit like Wikipedia; we try to link as much information from one subject to another as we can. It’s an ever-expanding web of information that will take you as far as your curiosity allows and even down the rabbit hole.
Every page contains a navigational menu at the top of the page, and just below every page title, you’ll find a toggle called, Page Table of Contents, that lets you quickly peruse the page content and decide where you want to go.
Below, youi will find a list of all the major areas of the website. Start in order or jump straight to your favorite topic.
Two Routes to Choose From
Not everyone likes to get into the weeds. To accommodate both styles of learning, we offer two routes: The Short Version and The Full Version.
Think of the Short Version like Cliff Notes. It summarizes the major points and tells you just what you need to know to understand the section’s contribution. Straight up, no chaser.
The Full Version goes into detail and depth. It includes reference links and citations, as well as links to related resources and subjects. This is the full monty.
Choose what works best for you. Stay on one track or bounce back and forth. It’s your choice and your ride, so giddy up.
The Whiskey Hub
This page contains brief descriptions and links to all the major sections of the website: history, production, evaluating whiskey, distillery and brand profiles, etc. So poke around and choose a trail. Learn a little. Notice more. Keep exploring.
The Story of American Whiskey
Every glass has a past, and some of its most fascinating chapters began far from a distillery. Follow American whiskey through early settlements, tax rebellions, river commerce, industrial ambition, Prohibition and the modern craft revival. Along the way, explore the people, politics and changing tastes that helped shape what America drinks.
A familiar name or an intriguing date can lead to an unexpected connection. Trace the evidence behind enduring stories, examine where legend enters the telling, and discover how the whiskey in your glass belongs to a much larger American story.
Icons, Innovators, and Rebels
Behind a familiar label may be an inventive distiller, a determined entrepreneur, a gifted blender—or a collaborator whose name rarely reaches the bottle. Meet the people who made American whiskey their life’s work, and explore the decisions, partnerships and circumstances that gave their contributions lasting influence.
Follow a biography into a distillery, a family business or a turning point in whiskey history. These connected lives invite you to look beyond the celebrated names and discover the communities, practical knowledge and individual convictions behind the spirit.
From Grain to Glass
A handful of grain, a living culture of yeast, the shape of a still, years inside an oak barrel: each offers a clue to how whiskey acquires its character. Follow the transformation through mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation, exploring the choices that connect raw ingredients with aroma, flavor and texture.
The pleasure is in understanding what to notice. Investigate why a producer might change a grain recipe, seek a different copper contact or choose a particular barrel—and bring those questions back to your next glass. The more you understand your whiskey, the more you’ll enjoy it.
Evaluating Whiskey
That fleeting hint of fruit, the warmth that builds, the finish that changes after the glass is set down—there is more to notice when you give whiskey a little attention. Explore aroma, taste, texture and finish while building a vocabulary that makes sense to you.
The Academy’s approach begins with a question and creates fair conditions for comparison. Learn to separate observation from expectation, record what you find, and explore why one pour appeals to you more than another. Curiosity and practice can make even a familiar whiskey feel newly interesting.
Regional Profiles
What changes when you follow whiskey across the American map? Explore the connections among local grain, climate, distilling traditions and the communities that make the spirit their own. Regional profiles offer a way into both familiar whiskey country and places you may not yet associate with a favorite pour.
Follow the movement of whiskey as well as the location on its label: a spirit may be distilled in one state and mature in another. Let geography sharpen your questions about place, without assuming that a border determines a flavor.
Distillery Profiles
A distillery is a place where countless decisions become something you can taste. Step into the stories of the sites behind American whiskey and explore how their histories, equipment and production roles connect with the bottles you know. A familiar expression may lead you to an unexpected building, city or chapter of a company’s past.
Use the growing index to follow those connections, keeping distillation, maturation, finishing and bottling in view. Each profile invites a closer look at where the work happens—and where the whiskey travels next.
Brand Profiles
A name on a label is the beginning of a story. Explore the brands that introduce American whiskey to the world, browse their expressions, and follow the connections between the company presenting a bottle and the producers behind its spirit.
A brand’s catalog can become a trail of discovery: compare related releases, investigate a change in style, or follow an unfamiliar expression back toward its origins. Look beyond the packaging and begin to understand how identity, production and the whiskey itself fit together.
Whiskey Profiles
Choose a bottle you love, one that puzzles you, or one you have never encountered. Whiskey Profiles offers a starting point for exploring its classification, place, distillery and brand, then following those connections into the wider world of American whiskey.
Compare available production details and explore flavor components that may matter in a tasting or a blend. A familiar shelf can become a collection of questions: what makes these expressions relatives, where do their paths diverge, and what might you notice if you tasted them side by side?
The Blending Lab
What happens when the bright edge of one whiskey meets the rounded texture of another? Enter the Blending Lab and explore how small changes in proportion can change the character of a glass. Build a useful blending library, get acquainted with the tools, and approach each trial with a question worth testing.
Work in small measures, record your choices and compare the results as you investigate balance, texture and finish. Some combinations will surprise you; others will teach you what to try next. The pleasure lies in both the experiment and the discovery.
American Whiskey Resources
A good whiskey question often leads beyond a single lesson. Find publications, databases and reference material that can help you investigate an unfamiliar release, explore a production choice or trace a historical story toward its sources.
The resource guides help you decide where to look and how to judge what you find. Learn what different sources can reveal, where their limits lie, and when a second perspective might change the picture. Follow one promising reference, and you may find the beginning of an entirely new interest.
The Scholar’s Corner
Sometimes the most compelling part of a whiskey story is the detail that refuses to fit: a date that changes between accounts, a familiar claim with an elusive source, or a name waiting to be connected with an event. The Scholar’s Corner invites you into that closer examination.
Explore timeline entries and linked research notes, follow the evidence, and see where questions remain open. Reviewed material and work in progress are distinguished so you can understand how an account takes shape. Stop for one intriguing puzzle, or stay to follow the research further.
