One-source synthesis of Eric Burke's blind paired bourbon comparison, with the tasting result separated from the method lesson.
Source argument
Burke records a blind head-to-head comparison between Buffalo Trace and Old Tub Bottled in Bond. His wife controlled sample identity, and he wrote notes and selected the winner before reveal. Buffalo Trace won. After reveal, Burke explicitly observes that alternating between the two whiskeys affected his descriptors and distinguishes this task from a full standalone sensory evaluation.
Evidence map
- EXT-283 — Blind paired protocol and dated purchase prices
- EXT-284 — Paired comparison produced a preference while altering perceived descriptors
The first preserves identity blinding, pre-reveal timing, purchase locations, bottle size, and dated prices. The second preserves the result and the reviewer's own methodological limitation.
Researcher synthesis
Identity blinding addresses one source of expectation bias; it does not make every tasting design equivalent. A paired comparison is well suited to answering “Which do I prefer in this contrast?” but alternating samples can change the descriptors perceived. It should not be treated as the same evidence as independent, full evaluations of each product.
This source strengthens ZET-50 — Tasting literacy requires method as well as vocabulary and supports the new ZET-63 — Paired tasting creates contrast as well as comparison.
The prices are useful as a dated local observation, not a current national market statement. The winner is Burke's documented preference under this protocol, not objective product superiority.
Assessment
Strength: Transparent one-reviewer record with identity blinding, pre-reveal notes, purchase context, declared result, and self-identified limitation.
Boundary: One session, one reviewer, no reported randomized order, repetitions, panel, replicate bottles, or controlled serving-condition record.
Next corroboration: A second independent sensory-method source before promoting ZET-63 to Established or creating a manuscript-ready Claim.
Completion result
Passed: one canonical Source; two verified, located Excerpts; result and method separated; limitations and open question recorded; one existing and one new Zettel connected.
