Identity and full supplied-copy coverage
Matt Nelson, “Causes of the Whiskey Rebellion,” HIST551, The American Revolution in Context; undated student research paper. DOCX metadata October19,2016, with September2016access dates. Do not infer an institution, awarded grade, peer review or formal publication date.
All nine rendered sheets read: title, entire essay, all footnote text and seven bibliography entries. Fourteen numbered footnote slots contain thirteen nonempty XML note bodies; slot8 is blank and a manual “8 Ibid.,p.20” is embedded in the preceding note. This is a reference-formatting defect, not an unread footnote. Single embedded image is a blue texture, inspected; no evidentiary figures, tables or appendices. Layout checked on sheets1,8,9.
The essay ends abruptly after a short Articles of Confederation paragraph and has an unclosed Hamilton quotation earlier. A bibliography follows. Treat as the complete supplied draft with uncertain finality, not as a verified finished scholarly publication. Search found no exact-title/author final copy; original remains unchanged.
Thesis and structure
Nelson argues regional distrust,political/social conflict and frontier circumstances explain resistance more fully than the tax amount alone. The essay moves through four western Pennsylvania counties, cash scarcity, whiskey barter, transport economics and still costs; hostility to collectors; Hamilton’s financial influence and alleged motives; Neville’s property attack; Washington’s military/diplomatic response; and anxieties surrounding the French Revolution.
Its useful questions concern different burdens of a common tax and the relationship between production, exchange and government. It is not original archival research, a quantitative comparison of causes or evidence for every quoted sentence.
Assessment and corrections
The essay frequently moves from historical description to certainty about personalities: Hamilton’s ego, wishing for a fight, possibly sending Knox away, and the French Revolution’s supposed effect on every federal official. Those are attributed interpretations or speculation, not demonstrated motives. Repetition of one encyclopedia characterization does not provide a second independent source.
The claim that eastern farmers were left untaxed needs narrowing: grain sales and distilled-spirits production are different taxable activities. Eastern distillers also faced the excise. Legal liability, ability to pass a tax to customers, cash flow and transport cost are distinct. “Producer rather than retailer” does not by itself show who ultimately bore all economic cost.
The essay says local courts were closed because they would not prosecute. It supplies inadequate authority for this; do not repeat it as fact. Distinguish ordinary state/local courts from federal jurisdiction and travel burdens.
Sheet8’s “only two instigators” confuses participants with the two men convicted of treason. Its narrative of capitulation by threat alone also obscures the militia’s entry, arrests and occupation. A12,000figure should be identified as rounded/phase-specific; the TTB account gives12,950requested and almost13,000assembled.
Official corroborating account: Michael Hoover, TTB, https://www.ttb.gov/public-information/whiskey-rebellion . Entire article text and notes read for this bounded comparison; embedded images were not all inspected, so this check does not complete that separate library source’s visual review.
The final paragraph overstates states’ independent diplomatic/military powers under the Articles of Confederation. ArticleVI conditions foreign arrangements on congressional consent and limits peacetime forces/war,while ArticleIX allocates central powers. See National Archives transcription, bounded relevant provisions: https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/articles-of-confederation . Do not use this essay to teach a system of unrestricted state diplomacy.
The essay’s contrast of Washington’s restraint with Hamilton’s enthusiasm oversimplifies decision-making; actual force and political persuasion operated together. Avoid asserting “certainly saved lives” as a measured counterfactual.
Citation and reliability audit
Bibliography: Chernow;Ferling;Hogeland;Murray;Slaughter;West’s Encyclopedia;Yacovelli. Most entries lack precise locators for all quotations. Hogeland’s title is truncated, his surname is misspelled “Hoagland” in the prose, and a different Founding Finance work discussed there is not clearly listed. Yacovelli lacks publisher/venue/location. “Ibid” is misspelled and its numbering broken. Kindle locations and edition/page references must be reconciled before quoting.
The first-century excise comparison and claims about co-ops,still cost relative to200acres,maximum fines,per-capita still concentration and national credit standing require direct consultation of cited works. The paper offers no dataset to measure these. Fine levels and approximate annual income are different denominators, not proof of motive.
The narrative centers settler fears of Indigenous attack without representing Indigenous sovereignty or perspectives. It does not adequately examine diversity among protesters,moderates,large/small producers or affected people. These are scope limits, not grounds to invent missing testimony.
Role in USWA
Low priority as a factual authority; useful as an internal critical-reading exercise. Ask learners to distinguish: tax mechanism, material burden, political grievance, documented action and inferred motive. Replace the “two instigators” error with a convictions-versus-participation distinction and trace a quoted claim back to its actual edition.
Use the established Whiskey Rebellion source network for published narratives. This student paper cites Slaughter and Hogeland,so it is not independent corroboration of those books. Its citations do not mean those works were fully read in this pass.
Cross-source connection
Existing ZET-3 separates tax conflict from a single motive. Add this review as a cautionary example, not new confirming weight. With Ichijo’s place-branding chapter, distinguish an institutional outcome from speculative intentions. With the Sisson handout, separate a narrative’s rhetorical force from its archival documentation.
