Smoke in a serving glass, smoke applied to ice or syrup, smoke associated with grain processing, and contact with a flavored component are distinct interventions. Labeling all outcomes “smoky” conceals their different histories. Goldfarb's varied applications offer a useful comparison set, but they do not measure equivalent chemistry, persistence, or exposure.
For a research record, identify the material treated, stage, contact route, quantities, time, comparison sample, and observed effect. Keep the perceived descriptor separate from the inferred cause. This principle also distinguishes direct residual-liquid flavoring from a documented finishing-cask history.
Evidence boundary: This is a synthesis from reported examples, not a validated smoke-infusion procedure. No combustion, tobacco, cannabis, or unvalidated material-contact exercise is recommended.
