Notes
Boone County Distilling Company is the named business or producer connected with Boone County. The guide below preserves the distinctions between business identity, current ownership where documented, and the sources of individual releases.
Brand Overview
Boone County is a Northern Kentucky whiskey brand that combines a modern distillery with a deliberate interest in the region's nineteenth-century industrial history. The company's phrase “Born in 1833 – Reborn in 2015” identifies two different chapters. Today's business was established by Jack Wells and Josh Quinn; its historical inspiration comes from an earlier Petersburg distillery. The present operation is not an uninterrupted survivor from 1833. Company introduction · 2026 founder profile
History Behind the Ghosts
The producer's historical account begins with William and John Snyder acquiring a Petersburg steam mill in 1833 and developing a distilling business near the Ohio River. The modern “Made by Ghosts” identity pays tribute to people associated with that earlier enterprise. It is a historical theme, not an assertion that old stocks or an unchanged nineteenth-century recipe survive in every present bottle. Historical account
Wells and Quinn came to whiskey from other careers. A 2023 interview with Quinn discusses his law-enforcement background, their friendship, and the work involved in building the company. Accounts distinguish the early planning years from the 2015 commercial revival. That distinction is more useful than forcing every source's reference to “founded” into a single undifferentiated date. Making a Modern Distillery
The Knowledge Library's The Spirit of Rye places consulting distiller Larry Ebersold among the people who helped Boone County and other emerging whiskey producers. That connection situates the company within a wider transfer of practical expertise from established industry professionals to new distilleries. It is evidence of technical assistance, not evidence that every Boone County whiskey came from Ebersold's former employer. No access — Larry Ebersold discussion, printed page 82.
The clearest current production statement appears on the Founder's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon page. The producer says that whiskey is mashed, distilled, aged, and bottled in Boone County, Kentucky, using a 500-gallon copper pot still. It is bottled at cask strength. Those expression-specific statements provide a strong foundation for the brand's own-distillate story without automatically assigning the same provenance to all earlier bottlings. Portfolio Landmarks
Small Batch Straight Bourbon is listed at 90.8 proof. Its product page emphasizes the historical tribute and tasting profile but does not, by itself, supply a complete production history for every batch sold under that name. Older Eighteen 33 bottlings and current Founder's Reserve releases should therefore be read through their individual labels and release documentation. A familiar brand name is not enough to collapse them into one source or age statement. Small Batch
The current portfolio is organized into essentials, Founder's Reserve, single barrels, cask finishes, and limited releases. It also includes related projects such as Gentleman's Cut. These categories help readers navigate the range, but a collaboration or separately named brand should retain its own identity and specifications. Portfolio
Northern Kentucky Contribution
Boone County helps broaden the geographic picture of Kentucky whiskey beyond Bardstown and the central Bluegrass. Its tours connect historical interpretation with a working production process, and the distillery participates in the region's bourbon tourism network. The most revealing comparison is between a clearly documented own-distilled release and an older bottle whose provenance is separately established. That approach shows how a modern company develops its inventory and identity over time. Distillery tours
