A 1950 company account depicts John E.Fitzgerald as a distillery proprietor. Campbell instead follows a 1941 Claude Bixler letter relaying Herbst's story of a keyholder who sampled preferred barrels, and Norman Hayden's account of the label purchase. Repeal-era supply difficulties lead into an 18-month,93-proof Kentucky Oaks advertisement dated January 1,1937.

Chapter 4 — competing Fitzgerald origin stories
Bibliography checked against PDF3,287 and expanded afterword. Ready to cite this source as attributed evidence, not independent validation or confirmation of an underlying historical document. PDF locators, not reader or original-print pagination. The alternative is itself a transmitted account, not an eyewitness record of the alleged theft. Do not turn the keyholder into a proven federal agent on this evidence. The label-purchase bargain is an anecdote, and the young-whiskey advertisement should be distinguished from later 100-proof positioning.
