Ashcraft, Brian, with Idzuhiko Ueda and Yuji Kawasaki. Japanese Whisky: The Ultimate Guide to the World’s Most Desirable Spirit. Foreword by Lew Bryson. Tokyo: Tuttle Publishing, 2018.
Ashcraft reports that Sasanokawa acquired remaining Hanyu casks in2004 while Akuto lacked storage permission, and that Akuto purchased them in2008 after obtaining a license. Hanyu equipment also followed different paths: one still became a display at Chichibu while another was repurposed for shochu.

Hanyu stock custody and bottling are separate from Chichibu distillation
Supported interpretation
Ashcraft reports that Sasanokawa acquired remaining Hanyu casks in2004 while Akuto lacked storage permission, and that Akuto purchased them in2008 after obtaining a license. Hanyu equipment also followed different paths: one still became a display at Chichibu while another was repurposed for shochu.
The account follows Toa’s2004 sale, Akuto’s departure and Venture Whisky’s formation. It distinguishes cask rescue, later ownership, release and physical equipment reuse.
Limits and usage
Academy use: record distillation origin, custody, bottler and equipment separately. A later owner or heritage display does not change the origin of older liquid or make new spirit a continuation of that liquid.
