Simonson, Robert. The Old-Fashioned: The Story of the World's First Classic Cocktail, with Recipes and Lore. Photographs by Daniel Krieger. Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, 2014.
Simonson examines claims connecting Colonel James E. Pepper and Louisville's Pendennis Club to the Old-Fashioned, then points to chronological, recipe, and archival problems that make a clean invention story difficult to sustain.
