Simonson, Robert. The Old-Fashioned: The Story of the World's First Classic Cocktail, with Recipes and Lore. Photographs by Daniel Krieger. Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, 2014.
Simonson treats Theodore Proulx's 1888 Bartender's Manual as the first known printed appearance of an Old-Fashioned recipe, while noting that one of Proulx's methods remains closer to an improved Whiskey Cocktail and another comes nearer the later simplified form.
