A controlled set of inspection, leak-location, hoop, spile, wax, flagging, heading, and closure tools used to assess and repair spirit casks.
Cask maintenance requires a controlled tool set and a trained decision process; the tools do not substitute for diagnosis.
Functional scope
This equipment class supports cask receipt inspection, leak location, temporary stabilization, hoop adjustment, closure work, wood-joint repair, heading work, and seal testing.
Representative components
- Inspection light, mallet, and marking or flagging materials
- Hammer, hoop driver, and suitable non-sparking or facility-approved hand tools
- Awl or drill used under controlled procedures
- Spiles, wedges, flagging, cask wax, and closure materials
- Head- and croze-work tools appropriate to the cask
- Leak-test supplies and required personal protective equipment
Use sequence
- Stabilize the cask and identify the leak class.
- Select only the tools and material appropriate to that defect.
- Protect the spirit and repair area from contamination.
- Apply the least invasive effective repair.
- Test the seal and document the result.
- Clean, inspect, and return the kit to controlled storage.
Safety and limits
Exact tools, materials, and permitted repair methods depend on facility rules, cask construction, liquid contents, worker training, ergonomics, fire controls, and contamination procedures. Unsafe access, structural uncertainty, or repeated failure requires escalation.
