TTB published the final rule on December 18, 2024 and made it effective January 19, 2025. The rule adds American single malt whisky to 27 CFR 5.143, requiring U.S. mashing, distillation, and aging; one U.S. distillery; 100 percent malted barley; distillation at 160 proof or less; oak barrels no larger than 700 liters; and bottling at at least 80 proof, subject to the rule’s additional provisions.
