Researcher synthesis
Keep category teaching separate from statutory definitions and subjective tasting generalizations. Current 27 CFR 5.143 permits American single malt distillation at 160 proof and bottling at 80 proof; aging need not occur at the distillery.
Regulatory comparison: No access and 27 CFR 5.143, checked September 6, 2026.
Assessment
The current regulation also allows new uncharred oak for corn whiskey. General straight-whiskey claims must not erase corn or single-malt exceptions. No empirical flavor comparison is reported.
Bottled-in-bond rules must be sourced separately. Do not promote this overview as a legal authority.
