Source argument

Barrels function as containers, maturation vessels and commodity units. The article combines historical/technical and modern uses with uneven citation support.

Evidence map

Source No access. Locators are LINK197 extraction lines; no direct quotations promoted.

  • Lines5–9: generic container versus capacity unit. Species list differs from Cooper (profession); investigate taxonomy, not an assumed synonym.36imperial-gallon beer barrel is not every cask.
  • Lines11–18 and reference135: Herodotus palm-wood interpretation is explicitly disputed through Rogers2014 p109 citing McGovern's Phoenician-amphora interpretation. This is a source trail, not original text verification. Early open tubs, closed casks and maturation must remain separate.
  • Lines18 and143: Gribshunden1495 dendrochronology2022 DOI10.1080/10572414.2022.2132715 is a promising transport/standardization source. Not yet read. Repeated Kilby passages in Cooper are not independent evidence.
  • Lines21–32: maturation and sherry sections carry no-source warnings. Oxygen entry,100%humidity, topping-up, pisco rules,600L sherry size/flor and solera description need specialist checks. Not every sherry style is biologically aged.
  • Lines34–40:4–9years as good-quality bourbon is an unsupported quality rule; char alone is not a sufficient color explanation. Old5.22 straight-whiskey reference omits later category distinctions. Scotch three-years-and-one-day, Canadian small-wood700L, Cognac two-forest exclusivity, tequila boundaries and automatic flavor improvement must be checked against primary sources before reuse.
  • Lines38–48:53USgallons is a common size, not a worldwide legal standard. Five-barrel/four-hogshead recipe, finishing examples, Tabasco since1868 and Vernors barrel flavor need original verification; no blanket novelty or age claims.
  • Lines49–60: humidity/proof direction is a generalization needing temperature/warehouse context. Baudoinia references are leads, not health evidence.40USgallons/fivebushels,42oilbarrel history and20gallongasoline yield are distinct measures, not whiskey proof gallons or contemporary universal yields.
  • Lines65–69: multiple citation-needed construction statements, hoop configurations and silicone bung generalization require technical sources. Captions read but images not inspected.
  • Lines73–84: wine-cask conversion table read entirely. Historical rounded imperial equivalents produce different litre totals; do not combine exact USgallon factors with rounded historical ratios as exact identity.
  • Lines88–105: brewery table tracks1454/1688/1803/1824 and changing gallon definitions; prevents applying one firkin value across time. USbeer31gallons distinct from wine31.5gallons.
  • Lines107–108: dry-goods pound and volume standards are commodity-specific; hardware anecdote unsourced.
  • Lines126–165: all38references and Britannica external entry read as entries, not full originals. Legal/source-era dates retained; search/discovery is not processing completion.

Researcher synthesis

Compare No access. The greatest value is a map of questions: ancient vessel identification, industrial standardization, wood effects and evaporation. Do not use the two encyclopedia articles as corroborating witnesses for shared text.

Preservation reconciliation — September 8, 2026

The original HTML snapshot is now included in the native Wikipedia-Captures-173-218.zip package on No access. Earlier preservation-pending language is superseded for that HTML only. Local original hashes and ZIP integrity were checked; native attachment presence was refetched. Remote images/assets were not bundled and a new cloud-byte comparison was not performed. Written-source reading does not establish that every cited work or illustration was reviewed. Other source-specific holds remain unchanged.
