Contribution to US Whiskey Academy
Cuevas provides a practical bridge from a desired learning outcome to modules, lessons, practice, feedback and media. Its best role is an internal design checklist alongside Stavredes and Herder and Hawks. It is not evidence that a formula can guarantee learning, permanent memory or unlimited delivery capacity.
Edition and Examination
Rebecca Frost Cuevas, Course Design Formula: How to Teach Anything to Anyone Online, first edition, Learn and Get Smarter, Inc., 2019. Paperback ISBN 9781732782310; Kindle ISBN 9781732782327. All 335 supplied reflowed PDF sheets were read sequentially, including front matter, endnotes, bibliography, resources and promotional material. These sheet locators are not print page numbers.
Thirty-two visual/layout sheets were inspected: 1, 2, 9, 10, 38, 81, 89, 92, 93, 99, 101, 105, 122–127, 129–132, 150, 156, 166–167, 177, 181, 191, 201, 231 and 333. Imprint, diagrams and rubric cells were readable. Third-party footer material is present. This is full examination of the supplied copy, not authentication against every published edition. Original PDF retained internally; image credits do not grant public reuse rights.
Argument and Useful Methods
- Sheets 12–36 and 77–87: define the desired performance before producing media. Separate course, module, lesson and individual learning objects. Audit existing Academy material against that purpose.
- Sheets 88–129: distinguish explaining facts, applying concepts and rules, using cognitive strategies, choosing actions and performing physical skills. Match practice and evidence to the task. The author’s five module templates are adaptable suggestions.
- Sheets 130–175: state conditions, performance, criteria and evidence; activate prerequisites, model reasoning, guide practice, give feedback and assess independent performance. Use the nine events as planning prompts rather than a compulsory rigid sequence.
- Sheets 176–185 and 203–246: select media for the task; make navigation, pacing, captions, alternatives and support usable. The house/furniture analogy usefully delays expensive media production until the structure makes sense.
- Sheets 248–287: test a small prototype with learners, determine whether instruction solves the actual problem, and revise from observed difficulties. Provide a route to technical help outside a failed login.
Critical Assessment
Research scope. The book mixes established instructional-design concepts, author interpretations, illustrative anecdotes and promotion. Its own caveat at sheet 197—that a course cannot meet everyone’s needs—qualifies the universal guarantees at 12 and 269. The 2014 thesis repository abstract describes rapid Turkish-language course prototypes, expert guidance and usability testing. Only the abstract was examined; the restricted thesis was not accessed. This does not establish universal effectiveness.
Memory and cognitive load, sheets 39–49 and 66–75. Do not adopt five-to-seven items as a universal lesson limit, infer that only the first items of a lecture enter memory, or promise permanent retrieval. Prior knowledge and task complexity matter. The book conflates motivation with productive processing and treats irrelevant game effort as germane load. Use clear presentation and meaningful practice without importing these explanations.
Assessment, sheets 143 and 153–175. A shared wiki can conceal individual gaps. The cake rubric at 166–167 mixes watching, posting and commenting with skill; three friends’ reactions are not a validated quality standard. Define the actual performance, legitimate reference aids and accommodations. Consent and private alternatives are needed for recordings. The book itself places high-stakes test design beyond its scope at 171.
Motivation, sheets 191–193. The author explicitly invents the equation. Its equal weights and common scale are unsupported; 33.3 + 0 + 20 equals 53.3, not the printed 55.3. Retain curiosity, relevance and visible progress as design questions, not a scoring formula or manufactured urgency.
Learner differences, sheets 210–231. Do not classify people as fixed visual, auditory, tactile or left/right-brain types. The book calls its hemisphere discussion informal at 214. The previously examined Rogowsky, Calhoun and Tallal study found no comprehension benefit from matching auditory/visual-word preferences to presentation. Gardner’s own explanation separates multiple intelligences from learning styles. Accessible choices and authentic varied tasks remain useful without those labels.
Accessibility, sheets 234–241. This is a starting checklist, not complete conformance evidence. For decorative HTML images, use an empty alt attribute rather than omit it, as W3C explains. Tables need meaningful structure; automated checks alone do not establish usability. Design access requirements before release and test real tasks with assistive technology.
Operational limits. Unlimited scalability at 13/58 conflicts with personal-support capacity at 162. Recorded teaching is not always ineffective; playback can support pacing despite claims at 208/217. Immediate feedback is not automatically optimal in every task. MOOC completion statistics and digital-native categories are not Academy benchmarks. Marketing can use aspiration and the author’s vivid metaphors while keeping outcome claims bounded.
Proposed Academy Application
Pilot one existing distillery-comparison lesson before any broad redesign. Define the task as explaining a production or historical difference using appropriate references and distinguishing evidence from inference. Check prerequisites, model one case, guide a second, then assess a fresh individual case. Provide accessible text and relevant diagrams, a private submission route and clear criteria for accuracy, attribution, reasoning and uncertainty. Use a later new case to examine retention and transfer.
Record assistance, learner time, support workload and cost separately from satisfaction and completion. Decide success criteria before the pilot; no result or implementation is claimed here. Do not require alcohol consumption to demonstrate research reasoning.
Cross-Book Synthesis
Stavredes and Herder supply outcome-to-assessment alignment; Hawks contributes modeled reasoning and gradual release; Cuevas adds an approachable course/module/lesson blueprint and prototype checklist. Fleck’s validation supports respectful corrective feedback without certifying competence. Jefferson and Tanton’s maintenance cycle counters the promise of a course that works forever. Together they suggest a maintained teaching product whose evidence, access and delivery capacity are reviewed regularly.
Extend the existing independent-performance synthesis rather than create a duplicate:
Supported practice must lead to evidence of independent performance
Remaining Decisions
Select the lesson, intended audience, scoring criteria, permitted aids, feedback schedule and support budget. Validate with actual learners. Historical app recommendations, prevalence statistics and every bibliography entry were not independently verified; none is adopted as current Academy policy.
