Author’s account

Okrent describes the Anti-Saloon League as a focused, cross-party pressure organization able to mobilize church networks and threaten electoral consequences. He also argues that replacing alcohol-tax revenue helped remove a fiscal obstacle to prohibition.

Organization and revenue arrangements help explain how a moral campaign became a practical national political project.

Evidence

Physical PDF 49–53 and 71–72. Selected narrative passages; underlying archival records and numerical estimates not independently audited.

Researcher synthesis

Separate public conviction, organizational capacity, electoral leverage, and fiscal feasibility. These interact but are not interchangeable causes.

Connections

Prohibition and RepealProhibition and Repeal

Abbott’s bibliography and the Remus literature provide complementary individual cases; they should not replace the population-level or institutional questions pursued here.

Limitations

Do not infer that a disciplined minority alone explains ratification or that income taxation made Prohibition inevitable.

September 29 expanded reading

The complete 593-page supplied text and all-page visual survey have now been examined; 28 pages received enlarged inspection. This note retains its original focused evidence at physical PDF 49–50 and 71–72. Those passages were re-read and the two linked paraphrases/citations remain faithful. “Complete” on this focused note does not certify every inscription in the book: copy gaps are tracked on the Source.

What the wider reading adds

The institutional explanation is richer than a claim that a small minority imposed its will. Church distribution networks and single-issue pressure operated alongside fiscal change, wartime political opportunities, competing reform agendas and unequal access to political power (49–128). Treat these as interacting mechanisms; avoid using one actor's boast as a measured national mobilization total.

Enforcement and adaptation (129–317) qualify a simple success/failure narrative. National law coexisted with exceptions, divergent local enforcement and disputed consumption estimates. The source's endnotes (435–495) have now been read: they mix archival records, contemporary press and retrospective accounts. Reading those notes is not the same as independently consulting every referenced document.

Proposed Academy use

Build a four-part explanation—conviction, organization, fiscal feasibility and legal implementation—then ask learners what each form of evidence can establish. Pair the altered Washington image (569–570) with a prescription (582) to distinguish ideological representation from administrative evidence. The price-list and prescription fine print is partly unreadable; do not invent its terms.

Critical restrictions

The discussion of industrial alcohol, medicine and adulteration is not practical safety advice. The 0.5 percent threshold concerns the historical statute and its beverage-purpose language; current-law teaching requires current official authority. The malformed sentence at 247 and source date/unit issues are recorded in the whole-copy assessment.
