Best use: practical teaching support. Eddy Salazar's The Art of Tasting Whiskey (copyright 2026) is welcoming, concrete and interested in what drinkers actually notice. Its value here is pedagogical. It does not replace technical evidence or the Academy's existing evaluation method.

Scope And Locator Convention

The supplied file contains 101 PDF sheets. The ebook interface reports 111 pages; displayed labels 19, 33, 42, 45, 50, 57, 63, 80, 89, 94 and 103 were not found in its OCR page map. These are capture/edition uncertainties, not a claim that eleven pages of prose are definitely missing. Use PDF sheet for physical position and displayed ebook page for the visible interface number. No constant offset works across the file.

Focused close reading covers the tasting interlude and chapters 4–7, with targeted screening of the category, oak, glassware and glossary discussions. Key retained and challenged passages were visually checked. This is a completed scoped evaluation, not a full-edition textual and visual verification.

What The Author Contributes

  • Aroma description: Chapter 4, PDF 61/displayed 67, starts with an obvious family and narrows to familiar examples. PDF 64/displayed 70 encourages kitchen-reference practice and keeping a journal.
  • Attention through time: Chapters 5–6, PDF 71–78/displayed 77–85, distinguish arrival, texture and the evolving aftertaste. The useful descriptive distinction is a finish that fades with little change versus one whose character changes.
  • Purposeful flights: Chapter 7, PDF 89–90/displayed 98–99, asks hosts to consider their audience, intended lesson, similarities and contrasts, and to preserve aroma, flavor, mouthfeel and finish notes.

These ideas largely reinforce existing Academy material. Three compact activities can add value without repeating the whole method.

Retain, Adapt, Or Exclude

Source passage
Decision
Academy treatment
Broad-to-specific aromas; familiar reference foods (PDF 61, 64)
Retain and extend
Add a lead/background/revisit record. The repeat check is an original Academy adaptation, not an experimentally validated protocol from the book.
Finish length, sensation, character and evolution (PDF 76–78)
Adapt
Use descriptive trajectories and separate warmth/drying from aroma. Do not import fixed duration bins or infer age and quality from persistence.
Choose a flight around an audience and question (PDF 89–90)
Retain with controls
Add a two-sample planning brief and explicitly record other differences that prevent causal conclusions.
Water breaks apart complex esters (PDF 60/displayed 66)
Exclude mechanism
Do not use this passage as a chemical explanation. Retain the existing measured-water comparison; observation of a change does not verify the proposed reaction.
Finish reveals quality/age; 15–30-second medium and one-minute long categories (PDF 75–76/displayed 82–83)
Exclude as thresholds
These are source conventions, not established universal boundaries or a quality test. Describe what remains and whether it is enjoyable.
Sweet/sour/umami lists include vanilla, citrus peel, leather and tobacco (PDF 68–70/displayed 74–76)
Correct classification
Keep basic taste, aroma resemblance, mouthfeel and chemical sensation distinct. A food association does not establish a basic taste or its chemical source.
American whiskeys cannot use caramel; straight American single malt contains no color (PDF 56/displayed 61; PDF 95/displayed 105)
Reject blanket rule
TTB's American single malt standard permits disclosed caramel coloring and allows “straight” at two years. Do not apply bourbon rules indiscriminately to all American whiskey.
Glass superiority, fixed aroma positions at a glass rim, production fingerprints and brand details (chapters 1–3; PDF 57, 73, 79–81, 84–90)
Do not promote
At most use as questions for a controlled comparison or later research. No brand facts or rankings are added to the course from these passages.

Independent Checks

NIDCD, Taste Disorders, “How does your sense of taste work?” distinguishes basic tastes, chemical sensation, texture and aroma. It supports the Academy taxonomy; it does not validate these whiskey exercises.

TTB, American Single Malt Whisky Standard of Identity, updated March 5, 2026 identifies a December 2024 final rule effective January 19, 2025, permitting disclosed caramel and the straight designation after two years. This corrects the source's blanket prohibition; it is not a complete regulatory audit of the book.

The existing course cites Ashmore et al. (2023) on dilution. Article text could not be freshly opened during this review because the available endpoints returned access errors. No new chemical claim or numerical optimum is based on an unread article.

Connections To The Existing Library

Tasting method, sensory channels, and practical whiskey care — LudlowTasting method, sensory channels, and practical whiskey care — Ludlow supplies the broader practitioner precedent: controlled setup, separate sensory fields and flexible vocabulary.

Tasting literacy requires structure without answer-key thinkingTasting literacy requires structure without answer-key thinking explains why structure should not turn published descriptors into an answer key.

Observe first, infer second in whiskey tastingObserve first, infer second in whiskey tasting preserves the boundary between observation and production inference.

Course Application

Three original Academy exercises are now integrated and connector-read-back verified:

  • AromaAroma — lead, background and revisit record.
  • Taste, Texture and FinishTaste, Texture and Finish — finish trajectories.
  • Whiskey ComparisonsWhiskey Comparisons — flight-planning brief.

The examples are invented for teaching. Existing illustrations remain appropriate; the book's wheel and illustrations are not reproduced.

The accompanying No access records adoption boundaries and exact locators. Connector read-back confirms the additions; public website/browser rendering was not checked. Only original paraphrase and teaching activities belong in learner pages; the uploaded PDF stays in the existing private source hierarchy.

Complete supplied-capture review — September 27, 2026

The earlier selective review has now been expanded to every supplied PDF sheet, 1–101. All page images were inspected, with enlarged checks of the barrel table (22), char table (25), wheel and caption (62–63), process/flavour table (73), and glossary break (97). The Movies mirror is 20,062,350 bytes and SHA-256 045efe1dedb198fb8181e74cdd45ab340e9ef73d588586e18dfaf3355f34267e, matching the preserved original's cataloged hash.

Keep Source Review Scope as Partial Source. The capture reaches its conclusion at displayed ebook page 111, but eleven displayed labels are absent: 19, 33, 42, 45, 50, 57, 63, 80, 89, 94, 103. Most gaps occur around section transitions, so absent labels alone do not establish eleven missing prose pages. PDF 97/displayed 107 visibly ends its peat example mid-sentence before a new Coffey-still entry. This is present in the image, not merely an OCR error; whether it is an authorial editing defect or missing source material remains unresolved. No publisher/ISBN or verified complete edition was recovered. The earlier Desktop attachment was not found there on this recovery check; Proton copies remain zero-resident placeholders. Do not equate completed supplied-file reading with complete-edition verification.

Coverage and contribution

PDF 1–7 covers the cover, title, rights, dedication, contents and introduction. PDF 8–19 introduces grain and national categories; 20–32 covers wood, heat treatment, maturation and finishing; 33–55 surveys glassware; 56–57 gives the tasting interlude; 58–65 covers nosing; 66–74 covers taste and mouthfeel; 75–82 covers finish; 83–94 covers flights, pairings and miniature blending; 95–99 is the glossary; 100–101 concludes. No bibliography, footnotes or independent study methods appear in the supplied capture.

The book's strongest contribution is a welcoming teaching voice. Family, theatre, music and journey metaphors help a beginner organize attention without requiring technical vocabulary. Broad-to-specific aroma naming, recording impressions, returning to samples, and specifying a flight's audience are useful practices. The closing insistence that price and prestige need not dictate enjoyment supports an inclusive Academy experience. Such metaphors and preferences should remain expressive; the limitation concerns factual mechanisms and causal conclusions presented alongside them.

Findings beyond the earlier scoped note

Categories and history — PDF 8–19. The initial four-rule definition is presented too broadly; the later Irish discussion itself permits wood beyond oak. Single-malt and national-style explanations generalize production choices into inevitable texture and flavour. The Irish-blend summary does not cover all combinations. Corn whiskey is not a catch-all for any 80%-corn spirit that fails a bourbon criterion. The E-in-country spelling mnemonic is a memory aid, not a labeling rule. Bushmills licensing versus company history is usefully distinguished, but the historical firsts, Old Forester comparison, Lincoln County invention attribution, Pappy/Samuels recipe-and-yeast story, and buckwheat regulatory rationale remain insufficiently sourced.

The Washington sidebar (PDF16/displayed15) incorrectly puts roughly 11,000 gallons in the first year. Mount Vernon's institutional history dates commercial beginnings to 1797 and nearly 11,000 gallons to 1799. Its production history also identifies the enslaved workers whose labor the compact anecdote omits. Mount Vernon distillery history; documented production and workers.

Oak and heat — PDF20–32. French, Spanish and Hungarian origins are not botanical subspecies. The tables confound species, geography, seasoning, heat treatment and previous cask contents. Their fixed signatures are descriptive prompts, not demonstrated fingerprints. The char table's monotonic progression from pale to dark and mild to maximum smoke is not validated by comparative data. Its “alligator/#5” terminology needs cooperage-specific checking before reuse. Ten-minute toasting is not a universal specification. Neither three-year spirit tasting like six-year spirit nor warmer-climate extraction establishes equivalent maturation. End proof above 120 does not by itself establish an increase without the entry proof. Outdoor stave seasoning and seasoning an assembled cask with sherry are distinct processes, despite being grouped together. Brand durations and finishing firsts need producer-specific verification.

Glassware — PDF33–55. The illustrations distinguish silhouettes and handling forms; they do not show measured vapor flows, heat transfer or superiority. “Science,” expert collaboration and competition adoption are not substitutes for a comparative protocol. The guide supplies no controlled data supporting its brand rankings, selective ethanol routing, aroma separation or guaranteed flavour effects. Its NEAT illustration visibly has a broad flared rim, while the prose describes a narrow mouth. The Copita origin explanation shifts from wine tasters to professional distillers. Treat product histories, dishwasher suitability and claims of firsts as unverified. Preserve the practical suggestion to compare the same sample in different glasses, recording fill, temperature, time and expectations; do not preannounce a winner.

Nosing and palate — PDF56–74. The useful core is gentle observation, pauses, familiar reference aromas and written notes. Reject the water-breaks-complex-esters explanation as supplied evidence of dilution chemistry. The book does not establish fixed fruit/spice positions at a glass rim, a shirt-sleeve reset, a universal temperature optimum, or the inference that texture reveals distillation care. Basic taste, retronasal aroma, texture and irritation remain distinct; vanilla, leather, tobacco and citrus-peel associations cannot simply be assigned as proof of sweet, umami or sour taste. “Everything else” being entirely the nose oversimplifies multisensory flavour. The explicit invitation to read labels and find predicted notes can create expectancy; use blind notes before revealing the story when testing discrimination.

Finish — PDF75–82. Duration, sensation, character and evolution are useful independent fields. Fifteen-to-thirty seconds and one minute are source conventions, not validated quality boundaries. A long finish does not establish careful aging, and a short finish does not prove youth or a fault. Grain sugars released after swallowing, clinging rye oils, dense compounds developing afterward and national-style mechanisms are asserted without supporting analysis. Retain the linear-versus-changing descriptive distinction while separating persistence, liking and causal inference.

Flights, pairings and blending — PDF83–94. Side-by-side comparison and explicit audience/lesson goals are useful. Commercial flights across ages, brands or regions change several variables at once; they can reveal differences but cannot isolate age, grain, proof or climate. The “region alone” conclusion is therefore unwarranted. Mellow Corn is called 100% corn in the advanced flight, but the producer page only supports at least 80%; it does not verify the book's exact figure. Heaven Hill's Mellow Corn description. Redbreast and Teeling are misleadingly grouped under a UK flight. Vintage/release-specific casks, proof and production locations require separate checks; no bottle database is updated from these examples.

Light-to-heavy ordering is a hospitality convention, not a neutral experimental design. Record order and alternate it for comparisons intended to test a hypothesis. Food-pairing and cigar passages express preferences rather than controlled effects. Miniature blends with measured ratios can be useful exploratory exercises; retain separate notes on the components and blended result.

Glossary — PDF95–99. Current U.S. whisky rules contradict the blanket prohibition on additions to all American rye and the prohibition on disclosed caramel in straight American single malt. Corn whisky also has specific storage conditions and an exception to mandatory oak storage. The standard uses oak barrels, not any imaginable oak container. These targeted corrections were checked against 27 CFR 5.143, displayed current through September 24, 2026. Other legal assertions are not comprehensively certified by this check. The attempted historical proof-ruling fetch failed, so the glossary's barrel/full-proof wording remains held for further verification. “Proofing back up,” hazmat thresholds, age measured until bottling, and grain-whisky definitions require more precision than supplied here. Non-chill-filtered is not necessarily wholly unfiltered, and sensory superiority remains a hypothesis.

Visual assessment

The flavour wheel (PDF62/displayed68) was read in full. Its eight central families expand into subfamilies and food/material associations, but it mixes aroma with heat, saltiness and texture. Its geometry encodes no concentration, likelihood or quality. The following page is only its caption; it is not a second missing wheel. The wood, char and style tables package associations attractively but supply no observations, sample counts or uncertainty. Illustration polish must not be mistaken for evidential strength. Preserve the originals internally; produce original teaching diagrams only where needed.

Linked synthesis and Academy use

Preserve the existing four evidence/citation pairs and two linked Zettels. The original broad-to-specific, finish-trajectory and flight-planning adaptations remain the best uses; no new public-course edits were made during this review.

Connect this note with the freshly reviewed Scotch guide Understanding Scotch Malt Whisky — 2026 Third Edition — Critical Literature NoteUnderstanding Scotch Malt Whisky — 2026 Third Edition — Critical Literature Note: both offer valuable descriptive language while overstating some sensory mechanisms. Useful next teaching proposals are a confound-aware flight brief, a glass comparison with independent observations, and a descriptor-to-hypothesis worksheet. These are proposed applications, not demonstrated learning outcomes.

Supplied capture fully examined; edition completeness, Proton hash identity, and browser rendering remain unverified. The accessible original and all existing record identities are preserved.

October 2 recovery-copy assessment

The owner-supplied 120-sheet capture was attached to the existing private Source and compared with the earlier 101-sheet capture. Displayed pages 80, 89 and 103 are now visible. Displayed pages 19, 33, 42, 45, 50, 57, 63 and 94 remain absent across the two captures. The Literature Note remains complete for the inspected passages, while the Source remains Partial Source for the published work. Do not infer content on the absent pages or use those locators as evidence. The tasting exercises remain proposed Academy adaptations, and mechanistic claims still need independent support.
