Jane Danger and Alla Lapushchik, The Bourbon Bartender: 50 Cocktails to Celebrate the American Spirit (Sterling Epicure, 2017), ISBN 978-1-4549-2629-0. The supplied 168-page PDF was read from first cover to back cover, including every recipe, chapter, appendix, glossary, credits and index. Every PDF page was also inspected as a rendered image. Main-body PDF page numbers equal printed page numbers plus 14. SHA-256 of this copy: d58d6b40a4137bf890b03584a44b19d7055e8468dbb27fc8e24bcfff40382ec1. Author contribution
The authors offer practitioner recipes and cultural context rather than controlled sensory studies. The strongest Academy use is the dependency structure of a specification: bottle/proof, modifiers, prepared syrups, ratios, method, ice, glass and garnish jointly define a drink. Ingredient discussion PDF28/printed14, equal-volume honey syrup PDF31/printed17 and Gold Rush PDF133/printed119 demonstrate why “honey syrup” without a subrecipe is incomplete. The Manhattan PDF41/printed27 and Black Manhattan PDF129/printed115 change both modifier and ratio; they compare finished designs, not an isolated modifier effect. Brown Derby PDF96/printed82, Boulevardier PDF72/printed58, split-base Saratoga PDF48/printed34, tea infusion PDF144/printed130, and Margot Tenenbaum PDF140/printed126 provide further controlled-comparison prompts after the Academy specifies actual products and service conditions.
Reliability and limitations
The printed Manhattan page calls Carpano Antica dry vermouth and Rittenhouse bourbon; the book's PDF43 treats Antica as sweet/Torino style, while Heaven Hill identifies Rittenhouse as straight rye. Preserve the source text and label any teaching correction as an adaptation. PDF158/printed144 indexes Alabama Slammer and Suffering Bastard as bourbon cocktails although their formulas at PDF88 and PDF103 have no bourbon.
History needs independent support. PDF78/printed64 itself reports the Seelbach's romantic 1912 origin as a publicity fabrication; check its underlying interview before public use. PDF86/printed72 says Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1939, whereas the National Park Service dates the attack to December 7, 1941. PDF102/printed88 sets an early-1940s Cairo episode in World War I. PDF120/printed106 refers to the TTB in the 1960s; TTB says it was established January 24, 2003. Other origin, “first,” and causal claims remain research leads.
No health or service protocol follows from the recipes. Raw eggs (PDF28,55,75–76), unvalidated syrup storage claims (PDF30–31), room-temperature bacon-fat washing (PDF67), and flame service (PDF46,135,138–139) require independent safety review. Toddy/pickleback cold and hangover claims (PDF63–65,102–103,116,139) are not medical evidence. The 2017 bars, festivals, counts and brand relationships at PDF84–86,109–111,125,153–154 are dated. PDF125/printed111 can introduce the difference between a whiskey brand and its contract production site, but current relationships need fresh verification. The glossary PDF156–157/printed142–143 is not current regulatory authority. Photographs show presentation, not measured composition, proven provenance or reuse rights; PDF155 provides credit leads only.
Academy synthesis and applications
- Paper exercise: reconstruct the Gold Rush's syrup dependency and identify all variables needed for a fair bottle comparison (PDF28,31,133).
- Source-critique exercise: preserve the PDF41 printed Manhattan specification, identify its product-category errors, and label a correction as an Academy adaptation (PDF41,43,129).
- Provenance exercise: distinguish the Seelbach narrative from the later fabrication disclosure, with independent interview verification before publication (PDF78).
- Contract-production exercise: distinguish brand, bottler, distiller and production site using the 2017 MGP discussion as a lead, not a current operations list (PDF125).
- Method matrix: record final volume/dilution and ingredient subrecipes before interpreting variations; “top” and subjective time/temperature instructions are not controlled endpoints (PDF33,56,59–60).
