Approved and renamed on 2026-08-24. “Barrel Heat Treatment” is the minimal retrieval umbrella. Toasting and charring remain technically distinct operations within it.
Definition
The controlled application of heat to a barrel interior during cooperage, including lower-intensity toasting and higher-intensity charring, to alter wood chemistry and create layers that affect later spirit interaction.
Scope
Use this tag when
- A source compares toasting and charring or discusses both as cooperage heat treatments.
- The retrieval need concerns interior stave heat treatment as a shared production category.
Preserve the distinction when
- A claim depends specifically on slower radiant toasting, direct-flame charring, the red layer, or surface char.
- The source describes one operation without the other; name that operation in the Excerpt and annotation.
Excluded
- Warehouse temperature effects after filling.
- General maturation evidence that does not discuss cooperage heat treatment.

Evidence decision
Bryson’s verified comparison at PDF pp. 199–200 directly distinguishes the heat regimes and wood effects. This supports one approved umbrella without collapsing the mechanisms. Existing relations were retained through the rename.
Future split rule
Create Barrel Toasting and Barrel Charring as child tags only when recurring evidence volume makes separate retrieval materially useful. A single additional passage is not enough by itself.
