Approved retrieval term. Use this tag when land transfer, warfare, treaty boundaries, settlement pressure, or state policy materially shapes whiskey history.
Definition
The connected processes by which colonial and United States settlement, warfare, treaties, land policy, and private encroachment displaced Indigenous nations and transferred control of Indigenous homelands.
Scope
Use this tag when
- A whiskey region, grain economy, transport corridor, settlement, tax conflict, or market developed through territorial expansion into Indigenous homelands.
- Evidence documents land cessions, disputed boundaries, forced movement, militia violence, or federal expansion policy.
Do not use this tag when
- A treaty is mentioned without explaining its territorial or political consequence.
- “The frontier” is used as an empty landscape rather than a contested, inhabited region.
Evidence cautions
Name nations and communities when possible. Do not imply that every signatory represented unanimous consent, that treaty language eliminated continued Indigenous claims, or that legal cession and lived control were the same thing.
