A historical claim should retain the chain from its original author or publication through any abstract, transcription and later editorial interpretation.
Careful editions can be reliable; mediation is a provenance fact, not proof of error.
A full transcription can still reproduce only an abstract. Record what was actually read so a quoted-through source is not mistaken for an independently consulted original.
Atomic idea
A historical claim should retain the chain from its original author or publication through any abstract, transcription and later editorial interpretation.
Reasoning
A full transcription can still reproduce only an abstract. Record what was actually read so a quoted-through source is not mistaken for an independently consulted original.
Located evidence
Whisky Words — Reading map, provenance and comparative course use
Original synthesis from a historical source as reproduced in a modern compilation; no claim of independent experimental confirmation.
Library connection
Brand history needs an explicit evidence ladder
Counterpoint
Careful editions can be reliable; mediation is a provenance fact, not proof of error.
Nettleton's 1913 book adds another source level
The 1913 volume is direct evidence for Nettleton's stated position. When he reports Bell, Allen, Thorpe or a commission, those accounts remain mediated until checked against their originals. It is also distinct from the 1894 flavor paper encountered through Thorne's abstract in Barker. A later book by the same author does not silently replace the earlier source.

Revised editions are another transmission layer
The 2017 Jackson guide separates original 2005 text and new text, and assigns section updates to named contributors. Credit the edition and section responsibility without guessing who wrote every sentence. This is distinct from tracing an abstract or transcription, but serves the same provenance discipline.

Complete-volume audit — 29 September 2026
Nettleton's complete661-page scan has now been examined. This closes the supplied-volume reading gap, not the separate gaps in its quoted originals. Statistics at physical PDF571–579 retain their Revenue/Statistical Abstract transmission; the directory at649–653 retains its historical date; the chapterXIX definitions at605–609 remain author proposals. Reading the containing volume does not turn quotations, commercial plates or recollections into independently verified events.
Whisky Words — complete-volume qualification, 29 September 2026
Full277-page Barker review now complete. PDF190's duplicated wording and254's printed1986date demonstrate why edition fidelity and original historical accuracy are separate checks. The Greenlees reviews225–233 do not constitute full reading of Barnard's commissioned book; Pattison243–272 is press reporting rather than a court transcript.
