At the beginning of this course, the task was simply to notice what was in the glass before explaining it. Now put the pieces together. The capstone asks you to make a comparison another person could understand, repeat and question constructively.
Choose A Manageable Question
Use this question: “Which of two preparations better serves a fruit-led neat tasting, and what observations support my choice?” You can work with the written case below or arrange a small optional tasting with a helper. In either version, use the Academy tasting record in lesson 11.
For the tasting version, select one whiskey and two measured preparations, retaining an unchanged baseline. The helper keeps the key, assigns unrelated codes, and includes a concealed duplicate of one preparation. Record the same glassware, serving temperature, timing and sample volumes. Work independently and stop rather than push through fatigue or discomfort; swallowing is not required. Repeat on a separate day with new codes and a different order if you want to explore stability across sessions.
Three Tasks, One Portfolio
Start with the written case below, then build the practical portfolio in short sessions. The tasks assess what the course teaches.
- Describe and repeat. A helper supplies a short coded set with a concealed repeat of the same preparation. Agree on a small attribute list and definitions before beginning; add unexpected observations in an open field. Record each sample independently, then compare after the reveal. Revisit on another day with fresh codes and changed order to explore stability over time.
- Predict and change. State a question and prediction, retain a baseline and make one measured preparation change. Record what would count against your expectation, compare equal finished servings, and explain the result alongside a plausible alternative. A changed preparation need not be preferred to be informative.
- Transfer and explain. Use an unfamiliar whiskey or lot withheld from practice, with a new code and the same recording rules. Produce a concise purpose-specific assessment, separate preference and a dated reflection. Document the range of products actually encountered.
For all tasting tasks, a preparer keeps the identity key, changes codes and varies sample order; the learner saves notes before reveal or discussion. Use comparable glasses, small serving volumes, temperature and timing. Record departures from the plan. Written and food-aroma routes remain welcome for learning; a written case can demonstrate reasoning but cannot certify whiskey sensory performance. Swallowing is not a requirement.
The Written Case
The following records are invented for learning. Equal small amounts of each prepared version were served in identical glasses at the same temperature and assessed after the same interval. The purpose was a fruit-led neat serving. Preparation A was 10 mL of a 60% ABV whiskey; preparation B was 10 mL of that whiskey plus 2 mL water, approximately 50% ABV. Tasters did not see this key until after recording.
- Code 418: orange peel clear; toasted grain faint; coating middle; pronounced warmth remains after fruit fades; prefer a gentler finish.
- Code 672: orange peel clear; toasted grain clear; lighter coating; gentler warmth; fruit remains noticeable later; preferred this serving.
- Code 935: citrus clear; grain faint; coating middle; pronounced lingering warmth; close to 418 in overall impression.
The key is 418 = A, 672 = B, 935 = A again. These are one assessor's records, not a group result.
Write a report of about 150 words. State the question and conditions, compare the observations, distinguish assessment from preference, examine the duplicate, and propose one useful next step. Include one interpretation with its confidence and an alternative explanation. Keep the original records visible beside the report.
Review Your Reasoning
Use this v0.2 formative rubric. For each criterion record 2: demonstrated in the submitted task, 1: partly demonstrated; specific revision needed, or 0: attempted but not demonstrated. Use not assessed when the task did not test it. Cite the line or sample record supporting the judgment. These ordered feedback categories are not equal-interval measurements and are not summed into a certification pass mark.
Criterion | Evidence to look for |
Question and preparation | The decision is clear; the comparison can be reconstructed, including visible information and actual serving conditions. |
Independent observation | Original notes precede discussion/reveal; appearance, aroma, taste, texture and chemesthesis are not confused; unassessed features remain explicit. |
Sensory development | The record follows arrival, development and finish; selected attributes have defined intensity categories; dominance is separate. |
Repeat and change | Duplicate similarities and discrepancies are reported; the planned change is measured; the learner distinguishes a descriptive comparison from a formal difference test. |
Interpretation and confidence | An explanation has evidence, a credible alternative and claim-specific confidence; sensory resemblance is not treated as documentary identity. |
Assessment and preference | A stated purpose and observations support the judgment; liking is separate; contrary evidence is considered. |
Reflection and transfer | The original survives the reveal; revisions have reasons; a fresh unfamiliar-sample task shows whether the approach transfers. |
Communication | Another reader can follow the conditions, conclusion and next step without needing an elaborate vocabulary or agreement with the learner’s preference. |
A score of 2 requires the relevant evidence listed in that row to be present and internally coherent; 1 requires some evidence but an identified gap; 0 means the attempted response does not support the criterion. Give one concrete next action for every 0 or 1. A supplied written case cannot earn evidence for the learner’s independent sensory observation, duplicate performance or new-whiskey transfer; mark those not assessed.
Assess duplicate performance from actual repeated observations across tasks, not from a learner merely saying that repeats matter. Consistency is considered alongside the ability to describe differences: giving every whiskey the same generic note is not strong performance. No fixed number of matching descriptors or universal acceptable intensity difference is assumed before piloting.
Feedback On Two Example Answers
“672 is older, higher quality and therefore the correct choice.” The case supplies no age evidence; the verdict also confuses preference with a supported quality argument. Interpretation and assessment are not demonstrated (0). Revise by identifying the observed finish and warmth differences, naming the purpose, and keeping age unknown.
“For this fruit-led serving, the record supports B: the fruit remains noticeable later and the warmth is gentler. I prefer it for those reasons. The A repeats share citrus and coating warmth, although one says orange peel and the other citrus. I would repeat with fresh codes and changed order.” Assessment and preference are demonstrated (2) within the written case. A full report must still document preparation and discuss an alternative explanation; those cannot be inferred from eloquent prose. The learner’s actual sensory performance and transfer remain not assessed.
For practical reviews, two assessors should first apply the rubric independently, cite the evidence for their ratings, then resolve disagreements. Keep the original ratings as well as the adjudicated feedback. Strong prose cannot compensate for an invalid comparison or unsupported sensory claims.
Where Professional Development Begins
The habits practiced here—independent observation, measured preparation, shared vocabulary, repeats and reasoned reporting—are the foundations on which a professional program can be developed. A future Academy qualification will need defined competencies, trained assessors, tested scoring criteria, appropriate accommodations, independent review, and fair retest and appeal procedures.
The course now supplies a versioned method, portfolio tasks and a formative rubric. A certification decision requires the learner study and standard-setting process described in the research companion. No learner trial or accreditation is claimed by this teaching revision. The immediate next step is to test these tasks with learners and independent assessors, then set and check defensible decision standards on new samples and candidates.

Continue Exploring
Keep your capstone record. Revisit it after more practice, looking for clearer language and better questions rather than a longer list of aromas. That is a useful measure of how your attention is developing.
