The whiskey you enjoy after dinner need not be the whiskey you would choose for a quiet comparison in the afternoon. A meal, a glass, a conversation and a little ice can all become part of the occasion. Informed enjoyment means noticing that setting—not apologizing for it.
Choose The Experience You Want
Analytical tasting holds conditions steady so a comparison is easier to interpret. Enjoyment may deliberately change them. You might want a cool, refreshing highball rather than a concentrated neat pour. Ask whether the drink works for that purpose: is its aroma still present, does the sweetness suit you, and is the finish welcome?
Research has examined context directly. In a whisky study, participants' ratings changed across rooms designed to emphasize different sensory impressions. The rooms combined multiple cues, so the result is not a recipe for producing a guaranteed response with one color or sound. Velasco et al. (2013), Assessing the influence of the multisensory environment on the whisky drinking experience, Abstract and General discussion.
Turn A Serving Preference Into Useful Advice
“Try a splash of water” becomes much more helpful when you add what you liked about it. “I preferred a measured water addition because the citrus was clearer and the warmth gentler” lets someone test your idea. Use the method from 05 — Water, Strength and Serving Conditions when you want to reproduce the serving.
For cocktails, compare complete recipes with the whiskey as the only planned change. Keep proportions, ice, mixing time, garnish and serving time consistent. A whiskey that leads a neat flight may play a different role once other ingredients join it. Evaluate the finished drink as well as the component; a pairing is a relationship, not a ranking of bottles.
Read The Recipe Behind The Recipe
A prepared ingredient has a recipe of its own. In The Bourbon Bartender, the Gold Rush refers back to a honey syrup made with equal volumes of honey and water. Writing only “honey syrup” in a tasting record leaves an important choice unstated. Record its formulation and measurement basis alongside the bourbon, modifier, ice and method.
Try this on paper: two tasting records show the same bourbon and the same poured volume of honey syrup. One syrup uses equal volumes of honey and water; the other has no formulation recorded. What would you need to know before explaining a difference between the drinks? Start by recovering that missing specification. If you then adjust the syrup or citrus to improve a drink, save the result as a new recipe version.

Make The Version Clear To Your Guest
An order for an Old Fashioned can carry different expectations. Albert W. A. Schmid describes disagreement over muddled fruit and recommends asking the guest or explaining the choice on the menu. That is a practical part of making a drink suit its occasion.
Try a short service exercise: your house version uses an expressed citrus peel and no muddled fruit. Write one sentence that explains it, then invite the guest's preference. For example: “We make ours with citrus peel and no muddled fruit; is that the style you enjoy?” Record an agreed change as a recipe version. If you later compare whiskeys, keep that fruit treatment consistent so it does not become an unnoticed second change.

Let Food Ask A Question
Choose a small familiar food and record the whiskey before it, then after it. Does a shared aroma become easier to notice? Does the combination feel more harmonious or more tiring? Keep the food and sequence the same when comparing two whiskeys, and include a later repeat without food if you want to examine the effect more carefully.
These are prompts for discovery, not fixed rules that one flavor must accompany another. Be especially clear about whether your recommendation concerns the whiskey alone, the pairing, or the entire occasion. Readers can disagree about the pairing and still learn from your observations.
Host Curiosity Rather Than A Contest
Give people a quiet moment to write or think before anyone describes the glass. Ask “What does it remind you of?” before offering your own vocabulary. Invite a broad answer—fruit, grain, wood—without requiring a picturesque list. Reveal the bottle story after the independent round if you want both a fair comparison and the pleasure of discussing its history.
Provide small pours, water, a spitting option and an equally welcome non-drinking activity. Nobody needs to finish a sample to participate. Participation should be voluntary and limited to adults of legal drinking age; plan transport so nobody drives after drinking.
MacLean's demonstration connects attention with appreciation rather than treating every glass as an identity exam. MacLean, Systematic Whisky Appreciation, supplied transcript, discussion of “enjoyment” — literature note.
Write A Recommendation For A Person
Choose a previous note and write two sentences for a friend: the occasion or serving you suggest, and the sensory reason. Offer an alternative if they dislike your leading flavor. “I would try it in this measured highball; the citrus stayed clear. If you prefer less oak, choose the other sample” is useful advice even without a score. The written exercise needs no new tasting.
Keep The Story And The Blind Record
For a two-pass experience, write independently under a neutral sample code, then add a truthful bottle story and record what it contributes to enjoyment or interpretation. Keep both records. Because the informed pass comes second, a change cannot be assigned to the story alone; repetition, time and discussion may contribute. A formal context experiment needs separate, balanced information conditions. In a social tasting, the two passes simply make room for both close attention and an engaging story.
