You can admire a whiskey and still choose something else to drink. Perhaps its smoky character is clear and its finish beautifully sustained, but you would rather have fruit and gentle oak tonight. That is not a failure of judgment. It is a useful distinction between what a whiskey does and what you want from it.
Start With The Job
Before judging, name the purpose: a neat sipping whiskey, a component in a blend, a highball base, or a comparison within a defined style. The same forceful oak that overwhelms a delicate neat pour might have a useful role in a blend. Keep a quality assessment of the component separate from a test of the finished drink.
The Academy uses four questions to build a quality argument: What is clear? How do the parts work together? What happens through the finish? How well does that serve the stated purpose? These are prompts for reasons, not a points formula. You need not count descriptors or award extra credit for every second of lingering sensation.
WSET's official spirits approach likewise asks for a supported quality argument and attends to the relationship between aromas and texture. We use our own questions and record rather than reproduce its grid. WSET Level 3 Spirits SAT, Issue 3 (2025), “Conclusions” and “Notes to students”.
From Flavor To Contribution
A smoky whiskey might supply a small accent in a fruit-led blend or become the center of a smoke-led one. Its job depends on the intended whole. Paterson describes anticipating each component’s contribution, then adjusting measured trial blends.
Using an existing tasting note, write three separate lines: what you observed; what you expect it to contribute; what a blend trial would need to show. “Smoky” is an observation. “May add a smoky accent without obscuring fruit” is a proposal. Only the comparison tells you whether that proposal worked. Use this distinction when recording Flavor components in a whiskey profile.

Explain The Judgment
Compare “excellent, very complex” with “orange and toasted grain remain distinct as the mouthfeel becomes gently drying; neither is lost behind the warmth.” The second sentence gives a reader something to examine. Add the judgment afterward: “That progression works well for the neat, fruit-led style being assessed.”
Complexity can mean several distinguishable features or an interesting development through time. Intensity describes strength of impression. Neither is automatically quality. A simple, coherent whiskey may succeed at its purpose; a crowded one may be tiring. Balance also does not require equal amounts of everything. One leading feature can be effective if its supporting sensations make sense together.
Imagine two notes that both list fruit, spice and oak. One describes fruit carrying into a gentle spice finish; the other describes oak abruptly overwhelming the fruit. The flavor nouns are similar, but the relationships tell different stories. When you call a whiskey harmonious or disjointed, explain which relationship led you there. Burnham and Skilleås develop this way of thinking about a whiskey as a whole. Burnham and Skilleås, chapter 8, pp. 137–150 — literature note
Investigate An Unwelcome Note
If you notice a musty, chemical, or otherwise distracting impression, first describe it and check the setup. Compare a fresh clean glass and, where possible, another pour from the same bottle. Record whether the impression recurs and how it affects the experience. A solvent-like descriptor is not a chemical assay; a sensory concern can prompt further investigation without identifying a contaminant or declaring a product unsafe.
For routine evaluation, “persistent musty impression obscures the fruit” is a more useful record than an unsupported chemical name. Suspected contamination belongs outside a tasting exercise: stop tasting that sample and investigate through appropriate product-quality channels.
Keep Liking On Its Own Line
Imagine two samples. A has clear citrus, gentle warmth and a coherent finish. B has a forceful smoky aroma that you love, but its drying finish obscures the fruit you were assessing. You might judge A more successful for the stated purpose and prefer B personally. Neither statement needs to erase the other.
Price and reputation should enter only after the sensory record if you are trying to assess the liquid independently. In a wine experiment, changing the stated price altered reported pleasantness for the same wines. That is a reason to separate information conditions, not to dismiss someone's enjoyment. Plassmann et al. (2008), Marketing actions can modulate neural representations of experienced pleasantness, printed pp. 1050–1051, Results.
What Does The Measure Stand For?
In a chemical report reproduced in Whisky Words, the writers explicitly used commercial price as their workable measure of commercial quality. They found that no single analytical figure captured it. That is an interesting historical question, but predicting price is a different task from predicting which glass you will prefer.
Before interpreting a result, finish this sentence: “Here, quality was measured as …” Price, personal liking, conformity to a standard and success in a particular blend each point to a different question. Naming the measure helps you decide how far the conclusion travels. “The Chemistry of Whisky,” as reproduced in Barker — supplied PDF 29–30
What Choices Were Available?
Imagine a menu with just one whiskey. A customer orders it. Have we learned that they prefer it to a whiskey the venue does not carry? We have learned what they chose from this menu; we still need a comparison to answer the broader preference question.
In 1913, Nettleton challenged an argument about consumer demand by alleging that tied-house arrangements restricted the products people could buy. Use that historical dispute to sharpen your own questions: What alternatives were available? At what price? For what purpose? A purchase and a sensory preference answer different questions unless the conditions connect them.

Read A Score With Its Key
Suppose one review gives a whiskey 92 and another gives it 95. Before deciding that the second reviewer liked it more, find out what each scale means. Check the critic, the exact bottling or batch, and any stated tasting conditions. A number from one system is not automatically interchangeable with a number from another.
On paper, invent two rating keys in which the same number means different things. Then explain the verdict in words. This small exercise makes Dove's question practical: what does the score actually tell its reader? You can still write a useful evaluation without assigning a number. Dove, chapter 14, pp. 229–238 — literature note
Try A Two-Sentence Verdict
Use the imagined samples above, or a previous tasting note. Write one sentence assessing performance for a named purpose, supported by two observations. Write a second sentence stating what you personally prefer and why. If both sentences say only “I like it,” add the missing observations rather than inventing a score.
Defend A Choice You Do Not Personally Prefer
Take two existing records. Make the strongest evidence-based case for each under the same stated purpose, then record your own preference. A learner may earn strong feedback while disagreeing with the instructor’s choice. The test is whether the observations support the argument, whether contrary observations are acknowledged, and whether the purpose stayed fixed.
