John Jantsch and Phil Singleton. SEO for Growth: The Ultimate Guide for Marketers, Web Designers & Entrepreneurs. First edition, 2016. Duct Tape Publishing (back-cover imprint). ISBN 978-0-9981203-0-0. PDF sheet locators throughout.

All 206 supplied sheets read, including notes, references and biographies. All 82 selected image/layout sheets inspected, including covers, metadata, the marketing-hourglass sequence (73), the strategy/keywords/content Venn diagram (87), and checklist (174–175). Original preserved unchanged; full-source coverage is not verification of every claim.

Useful strategic companion, unsuitable as an uncorrected current technical manual. Its distinctive value is treating the website as part of a complete customer relationship and a maintained marketing operation. Its weakest features are categorical growth claims, platform and agency preferences, unsupported quotas, and 2016 interfaces.

Argument And Chapter Assessment

  • Opening and chapters 1–3 (4–47): endorsements, traction/expansion/conversion stages, search mechanics and algorithm history. Stages can organize work but are not universal; conversion design belongs early. Historic CTR/market-share statistics cannot forecast Academy demand. The foreword guarantee (18) conflicts with the no-guarantee warning (38). Algorithm chronology is historical context.
  • Chapters 4–5 (48–66): integrate useful content, distribution and website design. Retain customer relevance and conversion planning. Reject the unsupported 99% website-failure figure, claims that a blog creates expertise, and categorical claims that generic site builders cannot rank. Platform suitability requires testing the actual implementation; this book does not justify replacing the Academy platform.
  • Chapter 6 (67–76): define audience, purpose, differentiation and journey before tactics. The Know–Like–Trust–Try–Buy–Repeat–Refer sequence on 73 extends attention beyond first purchase. Treat personas as research hypotheses, stages as revisitable, and differentiation as something customers must value.
  • Chapter 7 (77–90): connect search terms to products and margins; combine strategy, keyword analysis and content. Advertising competition is distinguished from organic difficulty (83), but higher bids do not prove better conversion (84). Autocomplete is a clue, not demand or sales validation.
  • Chapter 8 (91–100): audit before redesign and preserve discoverability during migration. Retain crawlability, navigation and meaningful descriptions. Fixed word counts, keyword-density shortcuts, percentage weights and all-image-title prescriptions are not reliable specifications. Structured data does not promise rankings.
  • Chapter 9 (101–111): relevant editorial links and useful partner resources are preferable to volume promises. Its own paid-link qualification exception moderates its blanket earned-only language. Domain suffix, anchor text, geography and 90/10 effort allocation are not automatic quality rules. Search Console is a sample, not a complete list of counted ranking links.
  • Chapter 10 (112–122): respond professionally to feedback and make genuine experience visible. Reject selective positive-review funnels, keyword-scripted reviews and reciprocal-review expectations. Private service recovery should be available to everyone without controlling who can review publicly.
  • Chapters 11–12 (123–138): social distribution can create discovery and relationships. Claims that social participation is necessary for SEO, or that follower count directly proves ranking power, are not established. The distinction between genuine expertise and popularity (132–134) usefully corrects the earlier blog-as-expertise claim.
  • Chapter 13 (139–148): bounded paid tests may reveal message and landing-page responses. They do not establish organic performance. Paid traffic share cannot support a 5–10x return comparison, and payment does not guarantee the top ad position. Historic trademark instructions are not adopted as legal guidance.
  • Chapter 14 (149–160): measurement must lead to decisions. Engagement is not satisfaction or learning; a test can be inconclusive. Old Analytics/Search Console interfaces and definitions require replacement, not literal implementation. More impressions do not guarantee more clicks or sales.
  • Chapter 15 (161–172): maintain a source list, editorial calendar and purposeful reuse across formats. Curation must add interpretation and preserve provenance. Reject automatic freshness benefits, fixed ten-curation quotas and the idea that all live content exists for SEO. Historical archives can remain useful when labeled.
  • Chapter 16 (173–182): scope work, examine comparable evidence, know who performs it, and assess reporting. Retain these procurement principles. Do not turn five-reference counts, degrees, local address, agency status or 2016 fees into universal gates. Outsourcing does not remove owner oversight; in-house talent is not inherently inferior.
  • Conclusion, notes and biographies (183–206): motivational metaphors and aspiration can remain persuasive language. They do not substantiate universal survival, ranking or revenue claims. The 126 notes and repeated chapter references are predominantly trade sources rather than independent experiments. Authors' consulting businesses provide relevant experience and commercial interests; neither endorsements nor interests alone settle truth.

Current Primary-Source Corrections

  1. Routine disavowal is not a default maintenance task. Google describes an advanced remedy for substantial problematic links with an actual or likely manual action and says most sites do not need it. This qualifies sheets 46, 104–110 and 157. Google disavow guidance.
  2. The links report includes samples and export limits; it is not all links Google counts for ranking. Search Console links report.
  3. Google Maps prohibits selective positive solicitation, discouraging negative reviews, incentives and requesting specific review content. This conflicts with the funnel and keyword-steering recommendations on 117–119. Retain neutral invitations and genuine experience. Google Maps policy.
  4. GA4 bounce rate is the proportion of non-engaged sessions. Engagement can arise from duration, a key event or multiple views; it is not simply the book's single-page definition. GA4 definitions.
  5. Ad eligibility and position depend on Ad Rank, including bid, quality and thresholds; paying does not guarantee top placement. Google Ads Ad Rank.
  6. Google has no preferred word count and cautions against superficial date changes or bulk additions/removals intended to make a site appear fresh. Reuse should add reader value. Helpful content guidance.

These targeted checks do not verify every historic statistic, product biography or vendor recommendation.

Proposed Academy Applications

All are internal proposals, not deployed features, approved budgets or validated outcomes.

  1. Customer-journey map (67–76): map a sensory question to a useful answer, a truthful sample lesson, an informed enrollment decision, supported practice and an optional referral. Acceptance: each step has an owner, a learner purpose, an observable measure and a recovery route.
  2. Question-to-offer portfolio (77–90): link recurring whiskey questions to an existing reference, lesson or profile; estimate maintenance effort and relevance to the offer. Acceptance: separate observed questions from assumed demand and distinguish brand from non-brand discovery.
  3. Editorial reuse ledger (165–171): connect each Academy-owned explanation to derivative email, visual or audio material with sources and review dates. Acceptance: each derivative adds a format-specific benefit; no word-count or output quota substitutes for usefulness.
  4. Neutral feedback workflow (112–122): offer support and invite eligible learners to describe their actual experience regardless of sentiment. Acceptance: no positive-only gate, reciprocal obligation or dictated keywords; any published testimonial remains attributable and permissioned.
  5. Measurement dictionary (149–160): define qualified visits, sample-lesson completion, purchases, refunds, service effort and demonstrated learning separately. Acceptance: every rate has a denominator, time window and attribution limitation; results may be inconclusive.
  6. Discovery and migration brief (91–100): document accessible navigation, crawlable public references, stable URLs and redirect ownership before any redesign. Acceptance: inspect real pages rather than infer fitness from platform brand. Private licensed books remain internal.
  7. Vendor evaluation brief (173–182): compare scope, assigned staff, evidence, account ownership, maintenance cost and exit handoff. Acceptance: ranking promises and link quotas do not count as proof; historic fees are not a current budget.
  8. Bounded message test design (139–148): propose one audience, one learner promise, an honest sample and a defined decision rule. Acceptance: no spending or outreach until separately authorized; paid response does not validate organic growth or learning.

Linked Ideas And Cross-Book Synthesis

Evaluate acquisition through delivery economics and learner outcomes

Extend acquisition economics through repeat use and referrals, but deduct support and maintenance costs. A satisfied click is not a profitable learner relationship.

A recurring audience question can become a maintained learning assetA recurring audience question can become a maintained learning asset

Recurring questions can become maintained reference assets; reuse follows source quality and a reader need, rather than freshness quotas.

Compared with Schwartz — Product-Led SEO | Useful References, Measured Discovery And MaintenanceSchwartz — Product-Led SEO | Useful References, Measured Discovery And Maintenance (Product-Led SEO), this book adds a fuller small-business relationship journey; Schwartz more strongly connects search to differentiated product utility.

Compared with BIZ-072 — Learning SEO From The Experts: Historical Tactics And Durable Content PracticeBIZ-072 — Learning SEO From The Experts: Historical Tactics And Durable Content Practice (Learning SEO From the Experts), the integrated operating model is richer, but both need current technical corrections.

Don't Make Me Think! — Clear Routes, Observed Tasks And Learner AttentionDon't Make Me Think! — Clear Routes, Observed Tasks And Learner Attention (Don't Make Me Think) supplies usability discipline: a search visitor must understand the next step.

e-Learning and the Science of Instruction — conditional design, practice and learning evidencee-Learning and the Science of Instruction — conditional design, practice and learning evidence (Clark and Mayer) supplies the missing outcome test: enrollment and engagement do not establish learning.

Open decisions: which audience/problem pair merits a pilot; what support burden repeat participation creates; which current public pages can serve discovery without exposing internal source copies.
