Colonial Williamsburg independently corroborates the grain, trade-disruption, price, and patriotic-identity mechanisms behind whiskey’s rise over rum.

Source argument

Theobald presents the transition as historically contingent. Frontier grain could be converted into a more valuable distilled commodity; the Revolution disrupted the molasses supply on which rum depended; domestic whiskey gained patriotic meaning; and imported-molasses duties helped preserve whiskey’s price advantage.

Evidence map

  • EXT-317 — Frontier grain could be converted into more valuable whiskey
  • EXT-318 — Blockade weakened rum supply while whiskey gained patriotic identity
  • EXT-319 — Imported molasses duties helped preserve whiskey’s price advantage

Researcher synthesis

The source independently supports four parts of the Kosar synthesis. It also resists a monocausal account: its discussion of frontier distillation explicitly complicates the familiar story that grain was simply too difficult to haul east. The defensible synthesis is therefore an interacting set of incentives and disruptions, not one universal mechanism.

Assessment

This is a specialist public-history account with discrete, recoverable passages. It does not quantify the relative weight of the mechanisms, prove a uniform national chronology, or independently establish the other factors in the original Zettel.
