The introduction (p. 7), type spread (pp. 12–13) and bourbon essay (p. 221) impose a two-year minimum too broadly. Page 246 quotes a minimum 81% corn for corn whiskey. Maker's Mark coverage at pp. 244–246 combines a production story, brand history and a particular 45% ABV expression's tasting note. This is not evidence for another proof or release, including the user's separate higher-proof blending component.

Current rule check

27 CFR 5.143(c), Table 1, distinguishes bourbon/rye from their straight designations: row (2) gives no two-year minimum, while row (5) requires two years for straight bourbon/rye. Row (3) specifies at least 80% corn, not 81%. The bourbon storage requirement is charred new oak, without a white-oak species restriction in that provision. Checked 21 September 2026; eCFR displayed current through 18 September.

Assessment and boundaries

The guide's authority and revision date do not eliminate the need to check an individual assertion. Current ownership, production, addresses, availability and all tasting descriptions remain unverified here. Page 73's warehouse-height and color/species generalizations are not adopted as operational or diagnostic teaching. No source images or 2016 descriptions are used to fill current bottle records automatically.

Authorship and library links

The book names seven writers and credits Smith with revision; it does not establish sentence-level authorship. Contributor overlap with Goodness Nose and the 2017 Jackson revision is relevant when assessing independence. A repeated statement is not automatically a second independent observation.

Full-book audit extension

All 354 supplied PDF pages are now read, including maps, labels, worksheets, index and credits. The earlier regulatory check above remains explicitly dated; this extension does not claim a new legal check.

Confirmed internal discrepancies provide stronger teaching examples than unsupported replacement facts:

  • Printed p. 241/PDF 243 classifies Jim Beam White as Tennessee whiskey while its bottle and picture credits identify Kentucky bourbon.
  • Printed p. 325/PDF 327 equates 9 million litres with 7.8 million gallons. The arithmetic is inconsistent: approximately 1.98 million imperial or 2.38 million US gallons. The underlying production figure is a plan, not verified output.
  • Printed p. 330/PDF 332 illustrates Nant Pinot Noir Cask single malt beside a review of sourced Double Malt. Smith’s photographed 7-year single malt also differs from the blended-malt panel and newer 12-year prose.
  • Printed pp. 340–341/PDF 342–343 define fermenter as mash tun, then identify washbacks as fermenters. The process distinction requires correction before teaching.

Other findings are verification leads rather than established corrections: Hibiki blended-malt labels (PDF 298), Murree chronology and oldest-in-Asia claim (PDF 321), Hven Calvados wording (PDF 317), and mixed-date ownership reference (PDF 344). The directory on PDF 345 was fully read as a bounded historical list; linked websites were not thereby reviewed.

Academy contribution after complete reading

Use the book for dated world-whisky comparison, sample-specific sensory vocabulary and source-literacy exercises. Its many regional examples help distinguish grain origin, distillation, maturation, bottling and ownership, but present-day claims need primary sources. Process variables should be compared without assuming that age, geography or a tasting descriptor proves causation.

PDF 354 assigns first-edition chapters to named contributors and all second-edition revisions to Gavin D. Smith. Retain collective bibliographic responsibility and chapter roles; do not invent sentence-level attribution. PDF 352–353 credits mix stock, commissioned and producer images, sometimes with legacy corporate names. Credit supplier is not a reliable ownership database or a reuse licence.

Local page-by-page notes and visual coverage are saved in the world-whisky-2016 review folder. Source identity and all four existing citation/excerpt pairs were reconciled by API readback with bounded locators. Native attachment, Proton exact-copy hash and browser rendering remain open as separate preservation/display checks. No current bottle or public course page was changed.
