Understanding American Single Malt Whiskey
Made from 100% malted barley, mashed, distilled and aged in the United States, with distillation entirely at one U.S. distillery at no more than 160 proof. Used, new uncharred or new charred oak barrels are allowed up to 700 liters; bottling is at least 80 proof. Caramel coloring is allowed only with label disclosure; other coloring, flavoring and blending materials are not. There is no minimum aging duration for the non-straight designation. The rule took effect January 19, 2025, with a transition for qualifying earlier-standard labels on spirits bottled before January 19, 2030.
