Understanding Straight Whiskey

The unqualified straight-whiskey type covers a mash with no grain at 51% or more, distilled at no more than 160 proof and aged at least two years in new charred oak entered at no more than 125 proof. Coloring, flavoring and blending materials are not allowed. The table also includes mixtures of straight whiskeys made in the same state. For a mixture to retain a named straight type, its components must satisfy that type; the same-type, same-state labeling provisions are explained in § 5.66(e). This page is not a catch-all for every named straight type.

Bottling must be at least 80 proof / 40% ABV. Shared whiskey requirement: § 5.143(a)

Under four years, an age statement is generally required. The youngest whiskey governs; a stated age may be understated but may not contradict the minimum for the designation. Age statements: § 5.74(a)–(b)
