Understanding Finished Whiskeys
Finishing is an additional maturation or treatment stage, not one universal federal whiskey type. Record the base whiskey, finishing vessel or material, and full label designation. TTB’s example of bourbon aged one year in new charred oak and then one year in used sherry barrels is a distilled spirits specialty, labeled with the bourbon base and finish; an oak treatment does not automatically yield the same classification in every case. This browsing collection can span several legal classifications.
