Understanding Malt Whiskey
This type requires at least 51% malted barley in the fermented mash, distillation at no more than 160 proof, and storage in new charred oak at no more than 125 proof on entry. There is no minimum storage duration for this non-straight type. Permitted additions are subject to the federal rules; the straight version has tighter restrictions. Malt whiskey is distinct from American single malt, which requires 100% malted barley and a single U.S. distillery and allows different oak barrels.
