Understanding Whiskey
Whiskey begins with fermented grain. The broad class requires distillation below 190 proof, whiskey character, oak storage except for the corn-whiskey exception, and bottling at 80 proof or higher. The broad word can also designate whiskey meeting a specific type, as well as whiskey meeting only the class standard; corn whiskey must retain its corn-whiskey designation. American origin is a separate question, so “whiskey” alone does not establish where it was made.
