One Literature Note synthesizes one Source. It should be understandable without reopening the source while remaining traceable to exact Excerpts.

Source argument

American distilling was made by a wider and more geographically dispersed set of people than founder- and brand-centered histories admit. Labor, ownership, technical authority, marketing, enforcement, capital, and public memory repeatedly diverged, and those divergences must be reconstructed from named lives, sites, records, and corporate transitions.

Evidence map

Reader locations checked for linked course citations

These links identify locations in the source by actual headings or distinctive passage openings. PDF sheet coordinates remain internal provenance; passage descriptions are not claimed as formal chapter titles.

  • Profiles headed “Jasper ‘Jack’ Newton Daniel,” “‘Uncle’ Nearis Green,” and “Lemuel Oscar Motlow” — discussion of Green’s distilling work and Daniel’s business
  • Profiles headed “Joseph Washington Dant,” “Minor Case Beam,” and “Thomas Jefferson Pottinger” — Maryland Catholic migration, kinship, and Kentucky distilling

Twenty-two source-attributed Excerpts, corrected and qualified in the September29 audit, cover the source’s inclusive method, colonial uncertainty, Mount Vernon labor, excise asymmetry, inventor myths, frontier economics, Crow and process lineage, New York industry, urban enforcement, Catholic migration, Nearest Green, Four Roses, Taylor’s tour, the Whiskey Trust, Takamine, Remus, Lythgoe, Dowling, Bronfman, Booker Noe, Weller–Stitzel–Van Winkle, and Maker’s Mark. Every record has a recoverable PDF-sheet range.

Researcher synthesis

This source most strengthens the existing web where it separates people, roles, and lineages that brand stories collapse. Its best unique additions are New York and Peoria as industrial centers, Catholic migration as Kentucky social geography, Takamine’s transnational process innovation, women’s ownership and wholesale labor, and the movement of whiskey capital through bonds, borders, surviving firms, and later brand memory.

Assessment

Useful secondary research leads with a substantial bibliography; specific corrections and unresolved gaps are documented in the September29 audit below. Because the profiles are short and popular in form, primary-source follow-up remains necessary for technical priority, “first” claims, disputed biography, law, and current facts. Copyrighted visual material is retained only as a discovery map to original repositories.

Completion checklist

Exactly one canonical Source is related.
Every consequential assertion is independently checked; source and linked-record limitations remain explicit.
Core Summary is complete.
Author Argument and Researcher Synthesis are distinct.
Limitations and open questions are recorded.
Candidate durable ideas are connected to the existing Zettels.
Note Status remains Needs Review while embedded-text gaps and verification work remain.

September 29 — Fresh Critical Review

The 2016 Abrams Image digital copy contains249PDFsheets. All main text, acknowledgments, bibliography and credits were read, all pages visually surveyed, and36selected details enlarged. This is not a claim that every embedded mark is legible: chart21–22, patent39and hospital83retain unresolved small-text gaps. Source remains Partial; Note remains Needs Review.

Contribution and Use

Its strongest contribution is a connected history of people outside the familiar founder narrative: Wilson's industrial Brooklyn operation71–72; Catholic migration and Kentucky networks91–96; Green and Daniel100–105; Peoria/WhiskeyTrust150–155; Lythgoe186–188; Dowling194–195; and bonded-stock/border strategies168–171and204–206. Proposed Academy applications include a labor-and-capital role map, a comparative regional industry map, and a source-evaluation exercise pairing a founder story with a patent, advertisement or newspaper report. These are proposals, not published lessons.

Corrected Library Evidence

The prior note set wrongly called27–30a Wilhelm Hendricksen profile,64–65a Jacob Boehm profile, and71–76a Samuel Mott profile. They are Kieft/Melyn, Thomas Lincoln, and Wilson/Gaff/Fleischmann/Squibb respectively.43–46is headed Neville/McFarlane. Existing identities and relations were retained while the excerpts/citations were corrected. The Thomas Lincoln anecdote supports whiskey used as exchange value, not a direct account of surplus-grain conversion. All22evidence/citation pairs now state source-attribution limits.

Critical Boundaries

  • Green's age comparison101conflicts with birth dates100. Daniel's safe-death story becomes more certain in caption107than in the prose. Brown-Forman's official timeline dates its Jack Daniel acquisition to1956, contrary to1947in105.
  • Sour-mash language68must not become a modern technical definition. Methanol dose/contamination assertions160–161are excluded from safety teaching. Legal, medical, first-ever and current-company claims require separate authorities.
  • The WhiskeyTrust90–95percent denominator151is unclear. Koji conversion153–155is distinct from fermentation, and a mysterious fire is not proof of sabotage.
  • FourRoses126–127and Maker'sMark220–222offer competing origin stories, not settled alternative myths. Pappy's NoChemists wording216is rhetoric; brand/site/stock histories remain separate.
  • Repeated newspaper accounts are attributed early reports.85caption names ThomasJ.Barry while clipping names Anderson;83hospital handwriting is only partly resolved;181murder interpretation is police theory;193contains provisional causation. Do not convert suspected death, arrest or allegation into a confirmed outcome.

Visual and Bibliographic Assessment

Hermitage advertisement58explicitly says W.A.Gaines,Frankfort,Kentucky; it cannot illustrate Jackson's Tennessee distillery. Pottinger's rack patent94is244662,19July1881. The maps48/77/123/179/225are historical itineraries, not verified current access.246–247are a thematic relationship chart rather than a family tree; its moral axes and rumor categories are not suitable as a factual Academy network.249is promotional back-cover text. Malformed NYTimes/WhiskeyWar bibliography243is visibly incomplete, not merely an extraction error. Credits236–237identify repositories without granting image reuse rights.

Cross-Book Synthesis

Compare Green with Love & Whiskey while recognizing distinct publication dates and author perspectives. Compare Dowling with Mother of Bourbon only as history versus historical fiction, never independent corroboration. Compare Booker207–209with Big Man of Jim Beam to distinguish plant/company dates and idea/approval roles. But Always Fine Bourbon is cited in this bibliography: shared stories are not independent witnesses. The consistent Academy approach is vivid attributed storytelling with separate ownership, production, labor and commemoration timelines.
