Liquid-liquid extraction and headspace SPME recover different volatile profiles. Targeted calibration and GC-FID quantification of selected compounds provide stronger quantitative evidence than uncalibrated peak-area rankings. The authors calculate odor activity values using published thresholds to nominate potentially important odorants.

Findings And Method
Liquid-liquid extraction and headspace SPME recover different volatile profiles. Targeted calibration and GC-FID quantification of selected compounds provide stronger quantitative evidence than uncalibrated peak-area rankings. The authors calculate odor activity values using published thresholds to nominate potentially important odorants.
Evidence Boundaries
OAV screening is not direct proof of whole-whiskey aroma causation; the study does not establish importance with a sensory omission/reconstitution experiment. Threshold matrix and units must be checked. The abstract's recovery generalization is not consistent with every table entry; identity/label issues also preclude automatic database import. Figure 5 scales different axes differently and its legend/caption disagree on one sample label.
Blending Lab Application — Researcher Synthesis
Connect this study to the existing bourbon omission study: OAVs prioritize candidates, while mixture experiments test contribution. Keep quantitative concentration, relative peak area and sensory response in separate fields; retain threshold provenance and never add OAVs into a flavor score.
The practical recommendation is distinct from the authors' tested result. Established chemistry and measurement definitions can be taught directly; a particular whiskey's response, a consumer segment or a profitable offer still requires appropriate evidence.
