A whiskey brand name can survive changes in owner, producer, liquid, formula, oversight, portfolio purpose, and market tier, so continuity of name must not be mistaken for continuity of product.
Some brands preserve more continuity than others, and change does not automatically imply deception or lower quality. Each historical transition requires case-specific evidence.
Brand history needs a provenance chain just as evidence does. Tracking ownership, production, regulation, inventory, and market position prevents a modern label from being projected backward onto earlier whiskey.
Established across multiple case histories. ZET-116 was consolidated here as a semantic duplicate. The Warehouse H review adds a particularly clear Blanton’s case: brand ownership, production, distribution, inventory selection, and trade-name presentation operated on different tracks after 1992. The node now spans Cascade, Old Crow, Beam, Van Winkle, and Blanton’s while retaining the case-specific continuity boundary. PDF209's erroneous Michter's ownership assertion must not enter the chronology. The inherited link to duplicate ZET116 is superseded by this canonical note. Atomic idea
A continuous whiskey brand name does not by itself prove continuity of owner, producer, liquid, formula, operating knowledge, oversight, distribution, or market position.
Reasoning
Brand history needs a property-by-property provenance chain. Cascade, Old Crow, Beam, Van Winkle, and Blanton’s show that ownership, production site, source inventory, selection authority, distribution, and public identity can change on different timelines. In the Blanton’s case, the post-1992 split among brand ownership, Buffalo Trace production, Age International distribution, and the Blanton Distilling Company trade name makes those distinctions especially visible.
Provenance
Multiple complete Literature Notes provide located case evidence. The useful relations formerly attached to duplicate ZET-116 have been consolidated here.
Counterpoint
Change does not automatically imply deception, lower quality, or total discontinuity. A brand may preserve cultural, sensory, family, or organizational continuity even when other components change; each property and period must be documented separately.

American Still Life — Separate business and product versions
Company, site, trademark and bottle specifications change on different timelines. The Old Tub name, Clear Springs venture, acquisitions, Early Times market-specific products and Black-label age/proof changes illustrate why a continuous label cannot establish a continuous liquid. These are attributed historical examples, not current product specifications.

Making Bourbon — additional source application
Raitz's McKenna evidence explicitly separates label authorization from the producing whiskey: Weller could use the label on other suitable whiskey. Trademark applications, first-use claims, plant ownership and inventory therefore need separate dated records. This does not itself establish deception.

Beam, Straight Up — renewed source comparison
The complete supplied-copy audit separates Noe’s post-repeal financing account (PDF19), family operation under corporate ownership (20), brand-lineage display (21), and distilling succession explicitly distinguished from corporate governance (117). The 1933 application (23) is evidence of requested capacity and claimed experience, not permission granted or achieved production. The 2012 bottle specifications (53–54) belong to a dated product version. Together with Pappyland, these passages support tracking family identity, ownership, site, liquid, authority and public presentation on separate timelines; neither continuity nor change alone establishes quality or deception.

Van Winkle provenance, selection, and brand mythology — Thompson. Existing evidence:
Noe and Kokoris — Outside investment exchanged ownership independence for operating capacity and
Noe and Kokoris — Beam family operating control persisted through corporate ownership. This is a bounded synthesis of attributed cases, not independent verification of every ownership event.
Bourbon, Straight — September 29 fresh review

Bourbon, Strange — September29 fresh audit

Bottom Shelf — September 29 source audit
Old Crow demonstrates why the brand timeline needs separate rows for trademark, owner, site, workers, liquid, bottler and portfolio role. The September 29 full review of Bottom Shelf qualifies the Chessmen origin as an attributed inference: bottler wording and recollection do not establish the filling batch. Compare Cowdery's dated histories and Spoelman's Bourbon Drinker's Companion without treating repeated secondary claims as independent proof. Proposed Academy use: a continuity matrix with explicit unknown cells.
