A common sensory vocabulary improves communication, but shared words alone do not show that assessors perceive, scale, and apply descriptors consistently.
For informal consumer blending, a bounded lexicon may be sufficient for recording useful observations even when formal panel calibration is neither practical nor claimed.
A lexicon can reduce ambiguity while still hiding differences in reference memory, intensity use, threshold, and interpretation. Calibration requires practice with references, repeated samples, and review of individual performance.

A Zettel is one durable idea in your own words—not a quotation, source summary, or draft-book claim.
Atomic idea
State one complete idea. It should be understandable on its own and specific enough to connect to other notes.
Reasoning
Explain why the idea is true or useful in Rationale and Implications. Record meaningful objections or exceptions in Counterpoints.
Provenance
Connect one or more Literature Notes. Direct source relations are legacy-only; trace evidence through the literature-note and excerpt chain.
Connections
Apply approved Tags for retrieval and one or more Themes only when the note genuinely advances those interpretive threads.
Maturity checklist
Application: Beyond Flavour (second edition)
The same term can describe temporal intensity, a location or an image. Jackson's revised Albariño description illustrates that shared words do not establish shared perception. Define terms and compare repeat observations; do not regard familiar diagrams as assessor calibration.

Council wheels — common terms still need repeat observations
The Council's source-specific wheel vocabulary and the video's emphasis on communicable observations are useful teaching aids. Neither establishes consistent intensity scaling, shared perceptual distances or assessor agreement. Preserve which wheel and version a descriptor came from, define ambiguous terms and check repeat observations. For a solo taster, within-person repeatability is not between-assessor calibration.

Bourbon Country Cookbook — flavor families do not measure agreement
The attributed five-family flavor framework and food demonstrations supply a vocabulary for attention and discussion. They do not establish common intensity scales, assessor agreement or a universal twelve-second fruit-perception threshold. A solo taster can record repeated observations without claiming inter-assessor calibration.

Schmid cookbook — familiar flavor words are not a ready-made taxonomy
The sour discussion mixes sweet, sour, bitter and spicy heat into a single flavor list, and the glossary combines useful culinary terms with questionable category definitions. Preserve source vocabulary and explain its intended use before importing it into a shared lexicon. This cookbook provides neither assessor calibration nor new sensory validation.

Sensory Evaluation Techniques — Critical Extension
Meilgaard, Civille and Carr (2016), pp. 165–233, distinguish shared vocabulary from assessor performance. Reference standards, repeat assessments and examination of individual agreement make calibration testable; consensus alone does not demonstrate independent reproducibility. Proposed Academy use: retain reference versions and individual ratings before discussing group consensus.
