Source argument

Reliable cocktail service is designed rather than improvised: a bar controls its workstation, preparation, ingredient choice, chilling, dilution, and service. Recipe records should also preserve credit, dates, places, tested proportions, and adaptations because products and tastes change.

Evidence map

The original five located passages are retained below; six additional located evidence/citation pairs now cover bar design, Seelbach provenance, two legal corrections, menu rotation and the photographed house rules. All 383 sheets of the supplied copy were freshly read and visually surveyed on October 2, 2026.

  • PDF sheet 39: shaking and stirring endpoints are conditional on ice, ingredients, and intended texture.
  • PDF sheet 46: PDT describes its recipes as tested, attributed snapshots and records source, creator, date, place, inspiration, and production method.
  • PDF sheet 66: Benton’s Old-Fashioned documents a repeatable transformed-base preparation and complete service.
  • PDF sheet 169: the Manhattan record preserves attribution, ratio, technique, and service while distinguishing specification from origin certainty.
  • PDF sheet 231: the Sazerac record preserves attributed provenance, composition, technique, and service.

Researcher synthesis

This source reinforces the existing flexible cocktail-form, controlled-dilution, and standardized-service nodes. It also supports a distinct durable idea: a reliable cocktail specification should be versioned and provenance-aware rather than treated as a timeless, authorless formula.

Assessment

The book is strong practitioner-primary evidence for PDT’s own methods and recipe versions. Its historical summaries and attributions remain secondary. Brand formulations and availability are time-bound, and its operating timings depend on stated ice and equipment.

Open questions

  • Which retained specifications changed in later editions or later bar practice?
  • What minimum fields should every recipe record require?
  • Which historical attributions merit independent primary-source verification before manuscript use?

Completion checklist

One canonical Source is related.
Consequential assertions are traceable to verified Excerpts.
Author argument and researcher synthesis are distinct.
Evidence quality, limitations, and open questions are recorded.
Durable ideas are connected to existing and new Zettels.
Full 383-sheet supplied-copy reading, relevant visual inspection, critical synthesis and new evidence links were completed October 2, 2026; native attachment identity and publisher-edition collation remain separate.

Complete supplied-copy review — October 2, 2026

The 383-sheet local PDF was read sequentially and visually surveyed in 20 contact groups; substantive diagrams, anomalous printed amounts, whiskey-primer statements and the photographed etiquette sign were enlarged. This confirms review of the supplied copy; the downloaded native Notion attachment matched its 27,574,184-byte SHA-256 exactly. Equivalence to every print edition remains unverified.

Located additional evidence

  • Station geometry and service flow, PDF17–25: PDT workstation diagrams record a service system / Meehan — PDT station design — PDF sheets 17–25.
  • The 2011 Seelbach rediscovery story, PDF231: PDT Seelbach origin claim is later contradicted / Meehan — Seelbach origin claim — PDF sheet 231. Later on-record reporting says Seger fabricated the historical discovery. Keep this correction distinct from the book's printed claim.
  • Bourbon mash upper-bound error, PDF303: PDT bourbon grain upper limit is not the current rule / Meehan — bourbon corn range — PDF sheet 303. The TTB's current guidance gives at least 51 percent corn, without the book's 79 percent cap.
  • Single malt Scotch overstatement, PDF305: PDT single malt Scotch constraints are overstated / Meehan — single malt Scotch definition — PDF sheet 305. The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 require pot stills and at least 40 percent ABV, not exactly two distillations or a 46-percent ceiling.
  • Partial menu rotation as PDT's operating change, PDF320–321: PDT menu rotation changed from seasonal resets to partial updates / Meehan — partial menu rotation — PDF sheets 320–321.
  • Photographed 2011 venue code of conduct, PDF334–335: PDT house-rule sign documents venue-specific service boundaries / Meehan — house-rules sign — PDF sheets 334–335.

Critical evaluation

The source is strong first-person evidence for PDT's own bar layout, measured technique, staff workflow, 2007–2010 drink versions and menu decisions. It is weaker as proof of older cocktail origins, present-day product identity, legal definitions or safe ingredient handling. The supplied PDF visibly prints implausible 75-ounce citrus lines on PDF127 and158, 75-ounce syrup on174, and 5-ounce cream on188; preserve these as source anomalies until independently collated. OCR also separates some fractions. The food section (PDF271–287) and infusions, raw eggs, open flame, tobacco/essential-oil ingredients and holding directions need current qualified safety assessment before learner-facing reproduction. Resource listings (PDF336–340) are dated leads. Bibliography annotations (PDF341–360) do not independently establish historical priority. In this supplied PDF the index (PDF364–383) has asterisk page locators, so cite the inspected PDF sheets.

Contributors and bounded use

PDF362 credits Peter Meehan with testing and writing the food recipes, Chris Gall with illustration, Peter Huynh with design continuity, Keith Geldoff with technical drawing foundations and Paul Pacult with spirits-primer input. Credit the relevant contributor. The book supports an Academy exercise comparing named cocktail versions by source, date, maker, ingredient identity, quantity, method, ice, vessel, garnish and tested change. Its bar diagrams and PDF320–321 menu account can frame a test of staff time, waste and guest response; they are not measured proof of universal outcomes. Use the Seelbach story to teach how to correct a materially false historical implication while retaining room for persuasive storytelling. Consult current primary legal sources for category rules and qualify all ingredient/food-service instructions.

Remaining verification boundary
